I'm not sure if it depends on where you live, but in Manchester the availability of tests is quite regular. So i studied first then booked it knowing i wouldn't have to wait long for the test. If there wasn't much availability i think i would still study first and then book it because like you i wanted to pass first time and not waste my money.
To make sure i passed first time i bought a DSA DVD that lets you take mock tests both for the questions and the hazard videos. I practiced the questions every day for about a month and got didn't get a question wrong in the test. Practicing the hazard video's was a bit more difficult because the scores seemed to be random even though i knew what was coming. But i'm glad i got to practice the video's as well so that i had an idea of the sort hazards they would include for the test.
Some people will say i went overboard in studying. I probably did, but last year i past my theory test and driving test first time. Everyone else i know didn't do as much and didn't pass first time. Not that i'm saying it's their fault, just that i think it pays to prepare properly.
(Sorry for the essay.) |

Book then study and then book your test asap. With studying buy the theory book with all the questions and answers. Read it and note down any questions you think aren't really easy. Then just learn those difficult questions and answers. |

I think the best approach is to make your theory first and then study. Although its important to know the book inside out. The book basically explains the rules out to you, and then you yourself apply those rules to the road based on common sense. I would start with theory because you need to have a good approach to the rules. Once you do that and become familiar with the rules and laws then you should be fine. Just know the signs, laws, things you should and should not do behind the wheel, and you will pass. |

from my experience i would advise you to study it first then do the test because if you think about it, what's the point of booking a theory exam and failing it the first time when you know you ain't studied for it?
when you've revised, THEN book it!
oh, and also it's HARD. you won't be able to just pass it like that, mostly you need like 40/ 50 to pass it! |
