Find answers to your legal question.

Should i let my 14 year old test drive on back roads?

my 14 year old daughter hangs out with 16-17 year old friends and they all drive. i have only ever let my daughter take hold of the wheel and now she is begging me to let her drive on back roads just to see what it is like...i know if i don't let her her friends will and that scares me. should i let her with my supervision?

Tell you're daughter to wait a few years and find some younger friends.

My God, we don't let 14 year kids drive for a reason. Letting her drive is putting you and your daughter in danger.

NO! Unless you both want tickets and all the rest that come with this. What happens if she can't control the car like you can't control your child. Use your head for once and gain a little control.
If you must let her take the wheel do it on a piece of private property, with no obstructions.

Do you really have to ask this?

Why on earth would you?

Back roads or not, it's illegal.

And you're committing a crime, by allowing her to do it.

Imagine the absolutely worst thing that could happen. Then if you are willing to accept that then do it.

No, never on public property. If a person without a license, under the age of 16 is caught driving on public roadways, he or she will not be eligible to receive their license until they turn 18.

In addition to that, a 14 year old has received no instruction (16 year old friends don't really count) from an approved driver's ed program. In the majority of cases, no matter how responsible they seem, a 14 year old does not know how to safely handle a vehicle. If your daughter is putting that kind of pressure on you, it is your time to step up as the parent. Remember, you are the adult and your daughter is legally and morally obligated to do what you want (as long as it does not endanger her). If you take your daughter driving, she may feel that you approve of her driving without a lisence. After all, if she can do it with you, why can't she do it with her friends?

Also, I believe that in some states, a licensed driver allowing an unlicensed minor to drive on public roadways can also be charged with some traffic offenses. That is something else to keep in mind.

Additionally, country roads would not be the best if you were to try this. County roads are often in very rough shape and harder to drive if you are not accustomed. People often expect little to no traffic in such sparsely populated areas, so they may drive more recklessly and/or not expect to see another car. Also avoid residential roads because pedestrian traffic is more prevalent. If you Absolutely feel like you must take your daughter driving, try to find a low traffic area not attatched to the roads (like a fairgrounds).

What makes you think that if you let her do this with you, that she won't also ask her older friends to let her do it?

The "right" thing to do is to be a parent and NOT encouage her to drive, illegally, on a public road.

Why don't you just get drunk with her, while you are doing this on back roads. By your logic, if you do it with her, she won't be doing it on her own, later. You KNOW I'm not serious about you and her getting drunk. But I am serious about how wrong it would be to let an unlicensed driver take your car on a public street. If she lost control, hit a fence, a barn, a cow, or flipped over and burned, it would be YOUR responsibility.

What if she got hurt, and authorities learned that it was YOU who let her do this. Do you know the penalties for "contributing the delinquency of a minor?" Or "Child Endangerment?" Plus, what will you be teaching her about responsibility and about obeying the law?

Ok - think about this.

No license for her - no insurance for her.

You PERMITTING her to drive with no license or insurance.

YOU get a MINIMUM of 9 points (6 for insurance - at least 3 for other offence) if caught.

If you take her onto GENUINELY private land...not back roads, an industrial estate or a car park. I'm talking a private air strip, farmers land then it is legal for her to be at the wheel. But YOUR insurance will be void as it will not cover being driven by her.

if you know that she is capable of driving. its better for you to be with her than the kids she hangs out with. i starting driving at age 8 not on the road(our camp has 1,300 acres). i know some people might not agree but my best memories were driving when i was young. my best was when i learned to drive a stick shift at age 10

No........if something should happen then you would be completely responsible for this and she would not be able to get her license until she is 18 years of age plus both of you will be ticketed for this and the vehicle would be impounded.

What she doing hanging with 16-17 years old or unless she is in high school.

But gone on and let her get behind the wheel before her friends do.

I would say it's better that she gain driving experience with you rather than with her friends, take it from someone who did a lot of stupid stuff as a kid, she's going to drive sooner or later, the only question is who's going to teach her? I got my learner's permit when I was 14 (grew up in SD) and I taught several kids (several under 14) how to drive a stick using my car because their parents wouldn't take the time to show them. I myself first drove a car (sitting on grandpa's lap) at around the age of 9 and drove (with a parent in the truck) at age 11. I was driving grain trucks from the field to the farm by 12 or 13 and was driving them to town to the elevator once I got my learner's permit. There's nothing wrong with a 14 yr old driving as long as they're taught properly by a responsible person. The key to being a safe driver (reguardless of age) is being taught the right way and gaining experience safely. If you do nothing she's going to find someone who will teach her, likely her 16-17 yr old friends...do you really want THEM teaching her how to drive? My advice would be to find someplace where there's no traffic, no cops and as little obstacles as possible and let her take a crack at it. I learned driving a beat up old pickup starting out in fields until I got the hang of the clutch and stopping and stuff, then moved on to little used country roads. Obviously not everyone has a place like that to use but if you have an old abandoned factory or warehouse or something like that near you that has a big wide open parking lot that would be a suitable location as well.

Better for you to do this than to let her friends that are likely not great drivers. You can teach her skills. Go where you know there is little traffic and cops.

By the way, why are her friends that much older? Do you really think that is a good idea? She will always try to do what they are doing, and that will lead to problems.

yeah definately, wouldnt you rather go with her to help her or her go with her friends.

lllHACKERlll
Yeah well

You should

But you should be with her

I still remember

I used to drive around streets at da age of 13

Just give her a try
