Should i stop driving?
|
i make deadly mistakes while driving, and today i had the second accident in a month. ( i have been driving for a year and a half now, never had any accidents before except for a few simple scratches).
i have decided to drive slow since my last accident and i have been so cautious since then, but today's morning while i was makig a U-turn, i hit a motorcycle that i did not see! no body believes me but i really didn't see him on the other side of the road. he and his motorcycle are fine but my car is a bit damaged.
what i really need to know is:
is it true that some people are not meant to drive? Additional Details Thank you all for your answers (Texas Ground Pounder, Ken M, grasshoppah, livin'paraJC, winston1smith, speedy266), it was not easy to choose the best answer as much of what you said is true. (the blind spot of the vehicle and being scared of driving).
Yesterday wasn't the best day in my life for sure. Anyway, I thought quite well about it and had a discussion yesterday with my husband. We have decided that he will take me to and back from work daily and I may drive only when he is with me. This is going to last till I get full control on the car.

Well, I don't think you should stop driving, but i definitely think some practice is in order. Driving isn't just the ability to steer and use pedals, it's the ability to watch, observe, and demonstrate cautiousness. But, remember, being scared or paranoid when behind the wheel (out of fear of accidents) is usually a good way to GET into an accident. Remember to relax, stay alert, and be cautious. Maybe drive around a few back roads a couple times a day, and just practice demonstrating the things I mentioned. (and while on backroads there's more room for error :-)) After awhile, maybe random motorcycles won't jump out in front of you anymore ;-) Good luck! |

Yes. Stop putting us all in danger. Get a bicycle. |

yeah, some people aren't meant to drive, if you can take the bus, do so or get better drivers training. How can you pull out of a parking lot and not see a motorcycle? If you are in a parking lot, you can even run over a person. Atleast you don't hit and run, so you have a + there. |

I think you know the answer to this question, soon enough if you carry on like this either your licence will be taken away or you will kill someone or both. Do us all a favour and get some more lessons and stay off our roads until you're safe to drive on them. I'm surprised you can afford you're insurance!!! |

You should get better over time. Even some people who have been driving for 40 years can't drive well. I am more worried about the drunks. Perhaps you are too cautious. You need to relax and just make it a habit to glance around once in a while. Did you have your radio turned up loud? Were you on the phone? Maybe you need to limit distractions. You could also try having a more experienced driver ride with you a few times and critique your driving. Maybe there is something you are missing. I did that when I started driving and realized I drove too close to the right side and was making other drivers nervous.
Yes, there are some people who are not meant to drive. But, if you are trying to be cautious and safe, I do believe that in time you will become a more confident driver and be able to put all of this behind you. |

Are you on the phone, eating, putting on your makeup, or doing something else that would keep your attention divided? That can seriously impair your abilities. I'm glad you're concerned about it, and you may need to seriously think about hanging up the keys. |

My wife had this same problem a few years back. She had totaled 3 cars in only 2 years time and had just wrecked her current car. They were mostly accidents that I just could not understand why they happened. Each was her fault and luckily no one was seriously injured. Her mother and I finally sat her down for a good talk about the problem. I mentioned some of the same answers as a few others have suggested. Relax, stay alert, and watch everything. Her mother added a suggestion that I had not thought of. She said that she should visit a doctor to see if there was anything going on “medical wise” that we did not know about. Turns out that this was the solution we had been looking for all along. It turned out that she was type 1 diabetic and had a slight case of A.D.D. The diabetic part was the biggest problem. If her blood sugar was too low due to not eating, this would make her anxious and therefore loose attention to what was going on around her.
Since you have only driven for a year and a half now, it may simply be that you lack the experience needed to control the vehicle. However, it could be due to other reasons. You might want to take the same advice that my mother-in-law gave to her own daughter. You never know, it could be your solution as well.

Try and take a defensive driving course. |

|
No don't stop driving, yes go to driving school, take defensive driving, if you really want to know how to drive go to a truck driving school. as far as u-turns go never make them, back into a driveway with a full view of both directions of travel before you turn. Also some vehicles have very bad blind spots where you can miss seeing a person or bicycle or motorcycle, learn your vehicles blind spots and watch out. hope this helps |

You can drive, you need more practice. Your scared of driving, that makes it worse, With practice you'll be more comfortable and you'll be ok. |

I don't think so.
You seem to be unaware that many drivers experience the same troubles, but, contrary to you, an overwhelming majority of them never admit it's their fault when truly it is.
I you are conscious that you were in fault, then you are just a better than the average driver; and since you are conscious of your past faults then you'll be more careful than many other drivers.
Don't give up and go ahead! |

you should maybe take some more lessons!!
An instructor will be able to let you know what you should be doing in these situations. If not i do think you need to get off the road as net time one of these 'mistakes' could be fatal! |

I would say so. Even with proper training and proper health, not seeing a person doesn't indicate a very... safe driver. |

Absolutely. That's why they have buses and trains. |
