Should i turn my car signal on for this reason?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should i turn my car signal on for this reason?

So i was driving with my mom one night in my neighborhood with no cars in the vicinity and i stopped at the side of the road to talk to a neighbor. Once the conversation was over, my mom insisted that i turn my left turn signal on. Her reasoning? to let the imaginary driver behind me know that i was starting to move again. I told her that the break lights do the trick. Which one of us is right?

I see your point, but it's a good habit to always use your signal when pulling onto the road. I know you're thinking since there was no cars on the road, why bother putting on a signal. I probably wouldn't put on a signal either, but it is a good habit to always use a signal regardless if there are other cars around because you may forget to use your signal when you should when there are other cars around.

Your mom is right. She's trying to get you in the habit of the proper use of signals, and using the signal to indicate you are pulling back out onto the road is good practice, whether there's anyone there or not.

Look at it this way - can you think of a reason not to do it?

If you don't you haven't developed a good habit.
All cars have blind spots and you may not see a bike coming.
In no way am I doubting your capabilities or the situation but it is always better safe than sorry.

use the turn signal

You mom was right. And if a police car happened to be sitting on the street watching you with his lights off so that you didn't even know he was there, you could have been ticketed (if he was so inclined to do so) Also, if you want to be really technical here, you should have hard your right blinker on when you were pulling over to the side of the road to let your mom talk to your neighbour.

Well you should have pulled off the road to talk to your neighbor. Any time you pull off the road you should signal that you are coming back on the road and use your turn signal. Doesn't matter if you don't see a car there or not. How do you know there isn't an idiot driving down the road without their headlights on? So don't say there isn't a driver just because you don't notice them.

That's like saying it's OK to run a red light if there's no cars coming because there's no danger of wrecking.

Just how do the brake lights "do the trick"? All three go on and give no indication of where you intend to go.

Your mother is right. Always use your turn signal. It's a good habit to have and you never know who's watching.

If you had, in fact, pulled over to the side of the road to have the conversation, then, yes, the turn signal would indicate that you intend to merge back into the traffic lane. It makes no difference if you were only stopped to have the conversation and remained in the car, or if you had actually parked, and returned to the car.

And, it makes no difference if there were other cars approaching or not. Just like in changing lanes, or making a turn, the law requires a turn signal whether or not you are aware of other traffic approaching.

However, if you were stopped in the lane of traffic for your short conversation, you would be technically obstructing traffic and wouldn't be in a legal situation in the first place. Signal or not wouldn't make what you did legal. If you were "kind of" pulled a bit to the side, legal or not, I would STILL recommend using the signal to indicate your intention to get back in motion.

Better to learn good driving habit now than never. It's a safe practise for your own and others. You would be at fault if accident happens b/c you don't signal.
