Over 60, and can drive a whole lot better than you can spell.
60 is the new 50 didn't you know?
I drive better and more safely than you young people. Passed my driving test at 17 and in the following 43 years have had one accident and that was not my fault, some idiot aged about 25 drove into the back of me while I was stationary at red lights!
Show some respect for your elders. |

Maybe the young say under 25s should not be allowed to drive they seem to have more accidents than anybody else. |

Not 60 , thats still young. maybe 80. i think the younger need to take it every yr. till there 22. they cann't seem to remember the rules of driving. which often get's older drivers in crashs.
and remember makeing such a law your going to have to do this one day.
and your an old person too a 10 yr old |

The most dangerous road users by far are young inexperienced drivers by a long chalk. Older drivers have much more experience of handling many types of different driving situations, which youngsters don't have. It is a misconception that older drivers cause more accidents usually put about by the young to detract from their own god awful driving "skills". I take it you are reasonably young as you seem to think 60 is old, but it really isn't, people live well into their 90's now a days so it is actually not old at all. I think everyone regardless of age should resit a refresher course every 10 years or so and youngsters be limited to an engine size of a bout 1000cc similar to lawnmower, until they prove they are worthy. Don't be such an ignorant young pup! |

The young ones that pass at 17 and up until 21 shouldnot be on the roads |

I think there should be many cases for people having to re-take the driving test and I think the police should be given the power to order a test re-take for witnessing poor driving. I do quite a lot of driving on motorways and the main culprits of poor driving are women in their twenties who sit in the middle lane at 50 to 60mph and will not move out of the way even when then inside lane is empty.
Taking away the privilage of driving away from someone just because they are elderly is not an option. By all means take it away from fools such as I've mentioned because they are inconsiderate and inept and basically, just cannot drive.
Edit: You seem to be very predudiced in your views, how would you like it if someone said you can't drive because you are black and therefor thick? |

Whilst I do not agree that older people cause more accidents than young people, in Spain at 70 and every 2 years thereafter it is necessary to attend a 'testing' centre to renew your licence. Eyesight, hearing, reflexes etc are all tested. Perhaps it would be helpful in UK as well |

No 60 is too young. Probably needs to start at 75. |

OUCH!! - OVER 60 IS NOT OLD!!!!!
(they mostly know how to SPELL as well !!)
But maybe over 80's should re-take it! |

Actually, there's quite a few people UNDER 60 that should re-take their test. So it's not an age thing - it's a good or bad driver thing.
I think I'd like to see some figures of how many accidents the different age-groups have before I made any pronouncements of this sort. |

There are problems with all drivers no matter what age. The young ones are too preoccupied with their tunes and cell phones. The middle age are trying to close a business deal or fax while driving. The elderly just aren't with the program any more. I think as a rule drivers age 70 should be retested or any driver , no matter what age, who has multiple driving infractions in a 1 year period. Some people at age 70 are sharper than a 30 year old. It all depends on the individual. |

Standards of driving keep changing. What's exptected of drivers keeps changing, too. Young and old alike need to keep up to date with the current safety standards on driving and I think everyone should take compulsory refreshing driving lessons say 10 hours every 10 years since the day you pass your test. I don't think age is the reason behind road accidents, it's the lack of sufficient knowledge on road safety. |

Not re-take their driving test, but have a test to show they know the highway code.
Over 60 is not old, over 80. |

...and what qualifies YOU to be such a good driver?
Good driving is about planning ahead, a GOOD driver does not need quick reactions, a BAD driver needs quick reactions!
By the way, i am not over 60 (nowhere near), but as a Driving Instructor i can recognise an over confident attitude to driving.
I hope your next accident doesn't involve someone else, only you. |

I would say once you get to 70 years old you should have to take a retest every 2 years (But not a full retest) Just to check you have fast enough reactions and can still drive the vehicle in a safe manner. |

Whilst I appreciate your point and would probably agree to an extent - after the age of 65 yrs, and only a reaction test - I would respectfully point out that the vast majority of accidents are caused by young people in their first few years of driving. Ask any insurance company! Having been involved in an accident involving an 'old git' I know how you feel though! |
|

Twiggy

Ever asked yourself why insurance companies give cheaper insurance to the wrinklies ? It`s because they are less likely to be involved in an accident than younger drivers. And just where do you read these stories about older drivers causing mayhem ? I read many more tales of young drivers being involved in horrendous accidents than I do about older drivers being involved. As it happens, I think that every driver should be re-tested every five years, regardless of age. |

So you can drive.
And what about your patience and courtesy to other road users? |

Well...Stuart...if you make it to 60...ask yourself that question will you? Seems like every young person doesn't realize that one day if they are lucky they too will be old (not that 60 is old). I've seen 70 year olds that drive better than 20 year olds. I'm 58 and will put my ability to control a vehicle up against anyone's. Live a nice longgggg life cause when you are elderly I want you to have some young kid tell you "since you're old maybe you shouldn't be allowed to drive". |
|

SML

No, what kind of person are you. Elderly people can drive just as well as regular adults.(because adults are talking with cell phones while elderly people are fully concentrated on the road!) |

Well well well so here we have a driver that knows he aint gonna run someone over eh! Get a life my friend, statistics already prove you wrong for a start. Also, check out insurance company profiles you will find that older people pay far less for insurance hope you understand logic better than you can spell because that shows they are a lesser risk. However, that does not say that young people can't drive properly because I know a lot of youngstrers who take great pride in their cars and in looking after them.
Finally, the next time you are driving around an estate near schools shops houses etc just imagine the horrifying prospect of a six year old running out from between two cars and straight in front of you................when he comes back down from the air and lands on the bonnet of your car.................does that make you a bad driver?????? |

Old buggers may be slow but at least they dont decorate their 1400 cc cars with big exhausts, loud stereos and incompetent stunt driving...
Perhaps the young ones should join the old ones in a re test? |

yes the old farts lose all awareness and consept of speed! or they should not be able to drive at all after 60! keep the old gits off the roads! |

I'd have no objection.
If they ask, no problem at all.
( age 64))
I agree with you 100%. |

Well, maybe not over 60, but over 75, yes. I live in South Florida where there are alot of elderly drivers on the road. Most are fine with the exeption that they drive a little slower than everyone else, but there are a few fatal accidents every year caused by an elderly person running someone over. The truth is at some point, their reflexes slow down, or they get confused and hit the exelerator instead of the breaks, etc. It wouldn't hurt to test them again after a certain age. |

Noarh B, beat me to it,at least us old codgers knows how to spell, and string two sentences together, without saying,"and it were like",every second, but to answer your point, yes i agree with you. |
|

Nicky
|
yes they should. sometimes their reaction time is too slow and also they drive so slowly that they force other people to overtake in dangerous places causing accidents. old drivers are more dangerous than young ones!! |
|

puddy
 |
the most accidents are caused by the young, but the biggest percentage of accidents per age group is that of elderly drivers. i think everyone should have to be retested every 10 years. |

People over 60 become less alert of their surroundings, especially when driving. They should retake it once a year for their safety and everyone else's. |
