Should pootlers be fined..they cause many accidents but no-one notices.?

You know the type, geriatrics/farmers who drive at 35-40 mph everywhere (even through 30 mph limits). They are totally oblivious to the growing tailback of traffic behind them. It's not so bad if you can overtake but sometimes there are two other pootlers behind who refuse to pass them.Anyone wanting to pass would have to overtake 3 cars (fine, if you've got a Porsche or TVR but not if you've got a Fiat Panda or Ford Ka).
which can cause accidents.
Inappropriate speed kills and 35 mph is inappropriate on a straight, dry main road.

Me again...someone who drives ridiculously slowly...you must have come across some surely.

rrrraaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
TOTALLY agree mate. This is dangerous!! They appear at the most inappropriate times too!

To be a conscientious driver you should go with the speed of the traffic around at the time on the road. I know someone who sticks RELIGIOUSLY in one lane even if NOT overtaking! It's ridiculous. Everyone thinks that the slower you drive, the better you are. How very very wrong.

Nice question mate! A real issue of mine

If by 'farmers' you mean large agricultural machinery, they are generally going as fast as they can, the vehicle physically will not go any faster. If you can't see their mirrors, then they can't see you.

For those who don't know what a pootler is, it's someone who pootles along, happily puttering along slowly with no reguards for their surroundings at all.

yes they should if they are causing a nuisance they should pull over and let everyone pass and then carry on

i say hang them all...

Me again
I've known many pootlers. Some of them are fine people. To paint them all with one brush is wrong.

I definitely agree.
When driving at those speeds it is too easy to become complacent. Its very hazardous.

Ofcourse they should be fined; maybe not astronomical fines but enough to make them pull over & think.

Happihawkeye
There should be fines for going too slow. We get fined for going too fast. The pootlers are all over the place here, and with their bad eye sight, slow reactions, and travelling 10 miles below the speed limit seem to cause more delays and accidents than other drivers.

They actually have signs asking for drivers to keep to the speed limit or pull over to let traffic pass on certain roads to the Highlands. And even then there are tailbacks for miles.

Grrrr!

At least the Amish around here are easier to pass--and they actually try to keep as far to the right as possible.

Yep, they should be taken off the road.

Think about it, in a NSLA zone we all drive at a speed we feel is the best compromise between speed and saftey. Now consider the crawler.... they only feel safe below 35 mph on a dry straight road - this is the safest road type - so, doesnt that mean they they are inherently unsafe?

In a similar vein....

Who else is annoyed by that idiot who tailgates you while you are obeying the 30 mph speed limit, but falls far behind you when you enter a NSLA zone?

Blaming others for being late are we?
Should all countries adapt the bump to pass rule used in figure 8 racing here in the USA? I think not.
Like it or not, people have a right to drive and if they need to go slow to be safe then so be it. Accept the fact that some pootler is gonna mess it all up and leave for your destinations sooner. And yes, speed does kill, but I've never heard of lack of speed killing except when it was some frustrated motorist trying to pass a pootler.

So called accidents are caused by careless driving, and I have seen more of that from the drivers who rattle down the road at speeds over the speed limit than from what you call pootlers. Just admit it you are not able to recognise a safe place to pass other traffic and are trying to pass the blame for your faults onto others. You need to recognise that there is only an upper limit for speeds on the road and apart from urban clearways and motorways, where there is a no stopping rule, you are allowed to proceed at any speed up to the limit. I presume that you are one of those drivers who no doubt use a mobile, hand held, while driving and own a Chelsea Tractor. What you need to do is leave earlier and drive with more consideration.
