At four-way stop signs, many drivers do not seem to know who should go and who should wait. Sometimes there are several cars that arrive at different times, but after the first one or two go, one of the remaining drivers cannot remember which of the remaining drivers arrived first. Some drivers do not understand the rules for deciding who goes if cars arrive at the same time.
Would it work to have sensors that detect where there are cars and the order in which they arrived, electronics to determine which car should go next according to the rules, and lights to indicate to the drivers which car is the correct one to go next?

We already have that. It's called an intersection controlled by a traffic light. And they are installed at every intersection where the traffic volume and safety issues make them financially feasable. Unfortunately, for cost reasons, there are still some intersections where only signs make economic sense. Tragically, the switch from signs to lights is often made only after a fatal accident occurs there.
I agree that there can be too much confusion at 4 way stops. Actually, I think 2-way stops are worse because they are more common and the prevailing opinion on how to proceed through is actually in conflict with the formal, written rules of the road. |

It would be rather expensive. Although it would be good for the drivers behind the idiot who doesn't want to move, do you really want to pay for the sensors and lights? If it was all done for free and no cost for the lights as well then sure, but that isn't going to happen. So I'll agree that there is something to the idea in general, just not worth the cost involved. |
