What's wrong with 70 mph as a limit? |
|

openyoureyespeople!

there should be a fast lane for drivers to do upto 120 mph ! |

It wouldnt make any difference you would still get some fool doing 50 in the fast lane! |

On certain motorways it could come in handy - the problem is the people that already abuse the existing speed limits |

Not automatically, there are places where it would not be safe.
On motorways, but not dual carriageways. We could have a rule that says lower in poor visibility, and ban anyone who can't cope with rules from driving.
But keep the automatic ban at 100 mph. |

The AA and RAC have been asking for this increase for years. I'd settle for getting the 70 limit back on the M1 between Watford and Luton after all the messing about for the last three years. |

Yes |

yes, but only on certain motorways |

Problem is this that once you increase the speed, people will once again push the speed up. Most people do 80 anyway when they think they can get away with it. Where to next? 80 to 90? |

of course 80 mph is more than a reasonable speed to travel.
as the cars today are more than capable of cruising at that speed safely.
mind you most roads could do with a change of limit most would go up and very few would be lowered if common since prevailed |

No. If they increased the limit, they'd feel the need to enforce it even more zealously than they do now, with profitable results ( for the government). We all do 80-85 now anyway, and unless you're driving like a plonker, plod rarely seem too fussed. A new limit would just bring more speeding tickets, unless they upped it to something useful like 100mph. |

Yes. Why? It's not how fast you drive...it's how you drive fast. |

I fail to see why a road that is designed for safety at 100+, with cars that are designed also to be safe at said speed should be restricted at all. Bring back Jam Sandwiches. |

In general I believe it is in the best interests of safety for the 70mph limit to be relaxed on three lane motorways. When it was first introduced when Barbara Castle was Transport Secretary, and was known never to have driven in her life or passed a driving test, her introductiuon of the the 70mph limit was panned by all driving experts including Police sources as ridiculous and stupid and not in best interest of safety, particularly on grounds that it created dangerous bunching.
In the very many years since then I have never once heard of any experienced driver coming up with any convincing argument or data to try to disprove or contradict what the experts said then about Barbara Castle's stupidity. Yet amazingly the 70mph has remained. But when there is congestion, interestingly the variable speed limits introduced on the M25 do seem to work and genuinely do actually lead to you completing your journey quicker when there is a lot of congestion. Surveys by drivers do seem to support it being extended such as to the M4.
So yes I believe the 70 mph limit should be upped to about 85mph on motorways but when there is congestion, then and only then, a lower speed limit should be temproarily introduced. On two lane motorways and non motorways, such as A Class dual carriageways the 70mph limit should remain in my view and the 60mph limit remain on single lane roads. |

YES BUT AS STATED ABOVE EVERYONE WILL PUSH IT PAST 80 WHILE DRIVING. |

No. most drive 80-90mph as it is and the police turn a blind eye.
Legitamise 80 will they be unofficially allowed to drive at 90-100mph. |

There are some highways in some parts of the USA where an 80 MPH (or even higher) speed limit is not unreasonable. But, there are other parts of the country where 65 MPH is too fast! Perhaps we need a system of drivers licensing like they have in Germany, where you need to be certified to drive the faster speeds, and you are REQUIRED to yield the traffic lane to cars coming up behind you. |

To go to the point about HGV's. Before 1994 lorries weren't speed restricted so you would have slow lorries, faster lorries and some in the middle that weren't slow but weren't fast. This meant that lorries didn't end up clumped together when on motorways.
The speed limit for lorries on motorways is 60mph but lorries are restricted to 56mph which seems a tad pointless - it only serves to stop lorry drivers speeding. Which means all HGV's effectively peak at the same speed meaning they all bunch together and when they try and overtake each other, it can take miles. To me this has an effect on safety, especially to car drivers doing 80mph.
A lorry overtakes another lorry, both doing very similar speeds give or take 1 or 2 mph so in effect, it's a rolling road block on 2 lanes. The cars in lane 1 either stay at 56mph behind the lorry, or they speed up slightly to a steady 60 and go into lane 2 to overtake the first lorry. They then have to move from lane 2 to lane 3 and most often, they don't increase their speed substantially enough when pulling into lane 3. So here you have a problem... you have cars in lane 3 doing 80mph, then someone from lane 2 pulls in at 65mph. The person doing 80 will have to brake (causing a domino effect so that everyone further back has to brake, leading to a build up of traffic and queues etc etc). Increase the speeds and you'll need a greater distance to brake. If that distance isn't there then you'll have no option but to have a collision at speed. And more often than not the distance isn't there because of a few reasons:
- People tailgating.
- People don't use their mirrors before planning a move.
- More traffic and congestion on the roads.
- More roadworks on the roads.
- All of the above combined!
I had heard somewhere last week that they were planning on imposing a speed limit on the German autobahns. |

Yes , the system should be .....
Lane 1 55 mph = Lorrie`s & caravan`s use this lane only !!
Lane 2 60mph for the middle lane hugger`s
Lane 3 80 mph with no exeption`s if you are found to be over this limit by 5 mph then you should get a £200 fine . anyone found tailgating should be fined get point`s and have there car`s restricted to 50mph for 6 month`s and be bannished to Lane 1 for 6 month`s .
But we can keep dreaming if we ever think they will raise the limit`s .....................
All lorrie`s & caravan`s should be banned from overtaking and should not faulter fron Lane 1 . |

No, it should not because there's too many lives being taken on the road due to excessive speeding. |
