Why?
I was pretty irresponsible myself at 16. Does that mean we should let people drive at 14? |
|

Absolutely not, and here's why.
At 16, you're still a kid. I don't care how mature you think you are, you're still an idiot. You're still learning, you don't have all of your coordination down yet, and you lack essential decision making abilities that are key to being a good driver.
are there 16 year olds or even 15 or 14 year olds out there who are more than capable of driving and driving well? Of course. I'm speaking in general. 16 is plenty young enough for most though and younger than that is dangerous. |

I don't think so because even at the driving age now, many teens are still getting killed. |
|

Hoose

Nope, should be raised to 18. |

No way. We have enough immature and inexperienced teen drivers as it is causing accidents every day. The driving age should be raised if anything - to 18 or 19. |
|

Absolutely no frickin way. They should be raised. |

No. And people that say yes shouldn't be driving, because obviously they don't understand how dangerous it is to drive. I'm 16 and I believe this. |

No. The insurance rates for a young driver is already out of sight. Now if the age to get a job can also be lowered to pay for the insurance, then I might give your question a second thought. |

no way |

NO! If anything raised. Too many immature nowhere near ready to be drivers on the road now ...... seems to be confusion over when texting or drag racing is "appropriate".
Granted there may be some who do take care how they handle themselves when driving and my thanks for all other drivers goes out to them but in comparison - the number is vast.
Driving is a privilege not to be taken lightly - not given just cos your friends are.
Take heed that your driving decisions or lack of could involve the life of someone other than yourself.
Want me to drive defensively, then return the favor please.
Thanks in advance! |

Definitly not, there are already unsafe early drivers out there who are immature about it. I think it should stay just the way it is. Not higher, not lower. |

No, do some research and you'll find out that the human brain isn't fully developed until a human is about 18 years old, the last part to mature and develop is the reasoning and logic part of the brain. So what we end up with is children that are lacking the brainpower of an adult, but in command of a 3000 pound high speed machine |

how low do you think it should be lowered to.
the majority of teens dont have any responsibility today for the most part. driving is a privilege not a right I believe it should be raised |

Absolutely not! If anything, it should be raised. Kids today are idiots.
Maybe if we got rid of the cell phones, things would be different. |
|

Lowered to what age? It's already low enough and I don't think a lot of these 16 year olds can even drive, yet they are out on the road. |

It's a matter of having mature judgment and the ability to make split-second decisions, which only come with age. I think they should raise the age to 18 or older. |

No, it should be increased by at least 2 years. Plus, our population's average lifespan has risen. |
|

Sinistra

It's 17 in the UK (16 if you're disabled) and I think it's fine where it is - perhaps a little higher wouldn't hurt. But I think maybe we need a system a bit like Australia where you have to drive on P plates for a year or so after passing. |

Nope they should raise it. Infact they should be raising the drinking age in the us from 21 to 25 to try and keep the beer outta the highschools. Zing! |

|
Hell NO!! Driving age should be raised to 17 1/2 to 18 years of age. Why do you think drivers between the ages of 16 to 18 are high risk? Because they ARE high risk! Lack of maturity, focus, skill, and awareness. |
|

Theman
|
It should be raised. Driving is a big responsibility not to be taken lightly and let me tell you another thing. Don't ever try to pull a trailer without practice, it takes alot more skill to pull a trailer than it does to drive a car by itself. The trailer part was just some extra advice that I thought I would add. |

No way. 16 is bad enough. Kids are not capable to drive responsibly. I should know. I was one once. They know how to drive fast and that's about it. They don't understand the consequences of their actions. If officials allowed kids younger than 16 to get licenses, there would be hell to pay to be sure. I hate to sound like an old fogie. But this is reality. Kids don't realize the whole picture as far as the concept of understanding responsibility is. |

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly. In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69. |

YES!!!! |

16 year olds are inexperienced because they have likely never driven before and they just need practice |
