Should the government mandate seat belt use?

If the government can save some money by saving your life, then sure. If you are in an accident without a seatbelt and you become parylized, the government now has to pay you disability.

I don't much mind the government telling me to use a seatbelt, but I do mind when they start legislating morality.

The government should not interfere so much in people's personal choices and personal lives. State law (at least in NY) says it's mandatory to wear a seatbelt. This is a concerted effort to make money (issuing violations tickets) along with insurance companies.

...Seat belts are often, but not always safe. I had a friend who would have died in a car crash had he been wearing his. On the flip side, there are many people who have been in accidents who would have died, had they not been wearing one... It should be up to the individual to decide on one's own well-being. Everyone knows driving a vehicle is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Common sense says "buckle up."

The reason the Gov't is wanting to make this law is because the lawmakers feel we are not smart enough to protect ourselves.

No. Mandating safety issues infringes on our rights. It also created an effect of invinceability. People have helmets on and they think they are invinceable. Same with safety belts. They will drive faster and take more risks than they would otherwise. Also, the claim that it will safe the government money by not having to pay for peoples medical expenses who are hurt in car accidents is false. I say this because, where does it say in the constitution or otherwise that the government, or society in general, should be responsible for paying for peoples medical expenses?

Gee.... Have you been in the USA Lately? The Federal Government has ALREADY mandated seat belt use, buy forcing the individual states to pass seat belt laws, or loose federal highway funding.

NO! they should not!
Don't misunderstand me, I think seat belts are a good idea, and that they save lives. I wear my seat belt, but the government has no business mandating their use. You can't outlaw stupidity!

A lot of state governments are regulating seat belt use. At first, I was opposed to it. Now that I've gotten used to using the seat belts, I don't mind it.

Everyone knows, it is the right thing to do, but there are a lot of hard headed people out there. I was one of them, even after having an accident that nearly cost me by life.

I've finally come around, and agree that all persons should be buckled into the car. If it takes a law, then so be it.

Yes, when it comes to safety because putting on your seat-belts is not going to kill you, it will save you.
