Should there be a full ban on cell phones while driving?
|
yes there are many accidents related to cell phone use, but what's the difference between accidents due to eating, makeup, site seeing, changing the stations? you can't put a stop to all that. we already have hands free device laws in CA and that's where we should stop. there are many reasons why we can't put a full stop on cell phone use while driving. for one, my father drives long distance to meet with customers and during this time he needs to talk to other customers on the phone. if he couldn't, how could he do business? another reason is reporting bad drivers or drunk drivers to 911. you can't pull over to the non existent pay phone on every corner and lose sight of the person? there are more reasons to keep hands free device laws the only law rather than to make cell phone laws more strict. I want to know if anyone can convince me why all use cell phones while driving should be banned. Additional Details my dads job is to make sales and conduct business calls including answering incoming calls while he is driving 3-4 hours away for a meeting. how can he pull off to the side of the road every 10 minutes? he uses a hands free loud speaker and keeps 2 hands on the wheel. how is that unsafe EXPLAIN

I dont think it should be illegal....whats next, I cant get a hamburger, or soda while driving. One day everyone is going to have to grow up and take responsibility for their lives and not let the government run it.
There where traffic wrecks way before cell phones, and there will continue to be wrecks long after they are banned. |

if it's without a bluetooth or texting. I feel that with my bluetooth on, I still drive fine. |

The busy person who spends a lot of time traveling (for example, a salesperson) often has a valid reason for needing to use a cell phone while in transit.
You may simply be spending much more time on the road than in the office. Hands-free headsets are an excellent way of safely using a mobile phone while traveling.
Some wireless providers offer hands-free headsets as part of their mobile phone deals.
These days you can obtain free cellular phones that offer voice recognition dialing. This makes it easy to program your telephone with important numbers and their associated names, and ensures that while driving you never need to even touch or look at your cell phone.
For the average person who simply carries a mobile telephone for safety reasons, extra cell phone accessories and features are not as necessary.
It can be assumed that in the case of an emergency, such a user would pull off the road to use the mobile phone. |

No. There should however, be laws that you can't text while driving, and you must be on a handsfree headset while driving. Drivers under the age of 18 shouldn't be allowed to be on the phone at all while driving because they are still learning how to handle the car and deal with other drivers, road conditions, etc. |

The answer is yes. And here is some things to consider to make this decision:
Most drivers forget one thing when they drive - they completely rely on the fact that nothing at all could suddenly happen. They will be following too close, too fast, don't pay attention at signals or not using them. All folks do these things on the road at the same time. When something does happen, it happens way to fast to avoid an accident - if you are on your cell phone you have no chances to avoid anything - you will be way too slow to react or use both your hands to cover the steering. When you use your cell phone you are not ready for any critical action to save the situation and it will always reduce your attention to signals and mistakes of others. Combine the fact that every other driver is talking away behind the wheel and you get a recipe for a tragedy. Just because cell phone studies have not been completed and statistics have not been generated we cannot ignore the danger factor that is obvious. And since most people cannot fully handle driving with no cell phone....what else can we say.
That call might be important, but I would never take my guard off the road for it - not worth the chances. |

Anything that takes away or distracts the attention of the driver away from operating the vehicle is dangerous. Read that as
Cell phones, PDA's, GPS, radio, etc.
Grooming, shaving, applying make-up
Reading,
Talking with passengers
Eating, drinking
Scenery, events
Some drivers can eat, drink or talk while driving. Too many of us can't. Bottom line is with the hands-on electronic devices, turn them off. If the phone does not have voice recognition software, either turn it off or get somebody else to do the driving. Driving does not allow multi-tasking - period.
I drove a gentleman between his home in El Segundo, CA and his office in Beverly Hills because he had a bad leg. He got as much work done on that 45 minute drive as he did in his office. He told me so.
All the best. |

It's extremely unsafe and it's ridiculous to compare it to momentarily changing a radio station. You can do that blindly while still concentrating on the road - should you need to react immediately, it's much easier to get your hand on the wheel. While you're talking with your phone up to your head, you're paying more attention to the phone than the road. And if you need to react immediately, well..you're probably out of luck.
I don't think that there should be a full ban. I think that talking while on a headset is much safer and should still be allowed, as well as emergency calls, et cetera.
Your dad's job isn't an excuse to put people's life on the line, either. So it's not our responsibility to ensure he can answer those calls.
However, it's still dangerous to eat/drink/DO MAKEUP, for the love of gods, while driving. This is foolish, but I don't consider it feasible to pull people over for it. There aren't enough cops for all the McDonald's. |

You are breaking the law if you don`t have 2 hands on the steering wheel while driving in the uk, and I agree with this. |

100% yes they should be banned. In my area a driver was killed when she flipped her car cause she was texting. I daily encounter drivers talking on their cells who have no clue they are driving poorly.
Edit- I stand by my feelings there is nothing so important you can pull over and park to text or talk on your cell. |

There are too many selfish people on the road who will continue to ignore the fact that they put everyone else on the road at risk of DEATH!
And they don't care, and since the police don't enforce the hands free rule(I live in Washington), they won't enforce the no cell phone rule either.
There is NO business that can't wait for someone to find a place to pull off the road and then talk. NOTHING is THAT important. It's NOT worth a life or possible severe injury. You can justify phone usage if you want, but to me it's VERY irresponsible behavior and as I said, VERY selfish and hazardous. And don't tell me you can't pull off the road for a few minutes to conduct business - that's an excuse that just does not cut it. |

Should there be a full ban on cell phones while driving?
YES!
Most definitely yes. One can argue all they want about using cell phones whilst driving but that does not diminish the fact that the driver is now distracted from a task that should require 100% of his attention.
My teenage son's car is currently parked at my wife's work in town and he is taking the bus to school for the next month. His Mother caught him on his cell phone in town the other day and observed him make a mistake in traffic. When she caught up to him she took his cell phone and his keys and had his car towed to the dealership where she works. And I agree with her. |
