Should there be a national maximum speed limit of 60 miles per hour? Why?

Americans need relief from the rising cost of gasoline, and gas mileage for motor vehicles decreases with increasing speed. Should the speed limit be lowered to solve this problem?

YES!!!
that way more people with scooters (or cabinscooter, or microcars) can get on the freeway and not be unsafe!!

(150cc is the minimum to be allowed on the freeway as per NHTSA rules)

There is TOO MUCH waste with Big cars being made. we need to soften the NHTSA rules to allow microcars from Europe to be sold here. It is fun to drive a really really small car!

Well yes and no. Yes because the faster you drive the more gas you consume. But this is also true in terms of how much you drive. You see, gas being consumed due to speed is one thing. But gas consumption is based on how much you drive and how frequent. I do think that having a national maximum speed limit would be helpful but not just for gas sake. But for safety. Do you know how many automobile accidents occur each year due to speed? Many of the accidents today can be cut down if we decrease our speeds. So yes I agree that having a max speed limit would help cut down gas costs, but it means nothing if people don't slow down, and if they don't use public transportation or use their car less frequently.

Americans can easily buy smaller cars to get relief at the pump. Choking the nation's highways is not the answer. Today's cars are designed to get decent economy at the national speed limit. Anyone who has more time, is free to slow down to save fuel.

Don't make me pay for other people's reckless purchases of vehicles they could not afford. Afford to buy fuel for, that is.

Why would this work if even on 55 mph roads, drivers still go 70-80 mph on the left lane?
