Should we applaud Swindon for getting rid of their fixed Speed Cameras?

If speed cameras work, then they don't generate any revenue, because they will have slowed people down to below the speed limit.

If they don't work, then they will be raising revenue and not improving safety

Any speed camera that is 'catching' huge amounts of speeders after it has been installed for more than 3 months clearly is not improving safety and should be replaced by some other mechanism

it puts the costs back into the police forces hands for their mobile speed cameras, which are sneakier. i bet the number of tickets goes up.

Slowing down for cash cameras then speeding
up after you have passed them,whats the logic
in that ?.
These cameras are just a cash cow for the
governments coffers as councils have to pay most
of the revenue collected from ensuing fines to
West Minister and councils have too pick up
the bill for there maintenance and we the
council tax payers are the ones paying for
that.No most of the speed cameras
need to go.

Absolutely, speed cameras were installed theoretically to reduce
speed. But the underlying reason , is to hammer the motorist into
paying up more dosh ! After all these cameras are usually strategically
placed, between areas relating to 30mph & 40 mph for 100 yds,or so.
Personal experience suggests you should not be fined for 32mph in
a 30mph area, just merely cautioned.

Speed camera's do have a place but not to police the roads in the way that they have become so established. Motoring should be left to human policing. Many people have been aware of the real impact speed camera's have and have been saying this for years. More should be spent on better education and road design.

I would say (my opinion here) that a reliance on camera's has added to the accident toll by being there. People learn where they are and behave accordingly. A police person could pull someone being a bit silly and have a word. Said someone reevaluates their driving. A camera pops a letter in the post. No admonishment for the actions that led to the ticket other than a few quid and a few points which have become the norm. No points here I should add.

It all started with the 1/3 claim a while ago. Went downhill from there. They claimed 1/3 of accidents were speed related. Some enterprising souls got their hands on the figures, you had to pay for them, real figure attributed to speed was 7%.

I don't think that all speed cameras should be disposed of, particularly in accident black spots. However, we have seen a rash of speed cameras pop up in the last few years in ridiculous places that serve no useful purpose other than to line the Councils coffers.Not only that but do they really work that well since the majority of motorists slow down for them, and then speed up after they are past them.

If speed cameras do save lives then so be it.

They do serve some purpose.People will slow down because of getting points on their licence's.
