Myself and a friend were chatting about this at the weekend and we figured the easiest way to get Chelsea Tractors off the road is to classify 4x4's as agricultural vehicles, then bring in a law that all agricultural vehicles are banned from built up areas during 6am-10am and 3pm-6pm.
The Farmers wont mind, as they don't go anywhere near built up areas anyway. Then the gas-guzzling people with more money than sense will be forced off the roads. |

No, we should live in a free country. This legislation and monitoring is smothering our freedom. I don't have a 4x4 but if I wanted one, I would expect to be able to. |

It isn't possible.
There is no legal definition of a "4x4" anywhere in Europe.
Vehicles can be banned based on emissions, whether they are cars, goods vehicles, buses, taxis, motorcycles, quadricycles, as there are legal definitions of all these.
Some cars have four-wheel-drive (from the Fiat Panda 4x4 through various Skodas, Subarus and Volkswagens, Audi's quattro versions, to all current Lamborghinis) - if you ban 4-wheel drive vehicles, you will ban these.
Some SUVs (tall cars designed to look as if they have off-road capabilities) do not actually have four-wheel-drive, but the casual observer would consider them to be a 4x4.
Without a legal definition (which manufacturers would find a way around) bans are not feasible. |

Should we ban stupid groups from wasting our tax money on other peoples choice of transportation? I'm forming a group to block your group from forcing our goverment to do anything. Besides goverment makes a ton off the gas guzzler tax. Why would they want to ban something that makes them so much money? |

'force' government! Good luck!
I'm no fan of 4x4's but most ownwers own them for reasons of need and reasons of fun like off road driving.
If you say a 'fun' reason is not good enough to own a 4x4 and your reasons for banning them are environmental, then surely going out in ones car for a day outr is fun too and should be banned? Some sports cars are not environmentally friendly either. Ban them too while your at it. |

I own four SUV's, three 4x4. I bought them to protect my family in case of an accident. If my family is in an accident, they will survive. You want to drive a 2000# econobox when 50% of cars on the road weigh 4000#, that is your right.
I pay more in fuel, tax, maintenance and insurance and it is worth every cent.
In 1990 a drunk in a crappy import crossed the road and hit my wife and two sons 8 and 4 years old head on who were in a Suburban. Destroyed his car, put him in the hospital, where I pressed charges and is now still in prison. My family Thank God in the SUV were only shock up. I even fixed the Suburban and drive it today for my large Radio Control hobby.
My son lost control...(sober) in a jeep Cherokee and hit a brick wall at around 50 MPH in a 55MPH zone. Bad driving, yes. He and his passengers survived.
I do not tell you how to protect yourself and your family, but I will not be told by some ill-informed person how to protect mine. |

Don't be jealous because you don't have one!! Just because that is not something you like don't mean others who do need to suffer. Get a life bud! Lets say you get stuck and there isn't a tow truck around. Hope that 4x4 leaves you in the dust! |

I wont do you any good starting a group. 4x4's are popular and will increase and not decrease, despite tax and other issues. Yes, I DO have one by the way and I love it! |

I don't believe banning a 4x4 in any area is the answer to today's needs, even though there are numerous drivers thinking they are gods when behind the wheel of a 4x4 and you all know who you are.
However what should be done is not banning but improving the width of our roads in the UK urban or otherwise, most of British roads today we're made for the little cars of our yesteryears, nowadays the vehicles are wider not just 4x4's although I believe the Humvee should be banned from being imported into this country let alone allowed to be driven on the roads now that vehicle is too wide for any road here in the UK, and even worse when being used on a school run, but that's my opinion. |

This is nothing but a bandwagon jump on. 4x4's are not the problem, bear in mind that yes they are tall, but lengthwise they take up no more space than a normal family sized car.
This sort of totalitarian approach is, and always will be, ridiculous. Does this mean that my 1.8 freelander will not be welcome in your town, but my 4 litre TVR will be? I know which one is more antisocial and more polluting.
Whats the point of the ban? What are you trying to achieve? If you want to reduce congestion you'd do better than to ban 4x4's which make up a whopping 3.4% of all UK car sales.
Why not put your efforts to a more beneficial cause if you're concerned about road safety or pollution? Why not do something like Gumtree where each town has a list of people who will share lifts to reduce congestion and save people money.
Prevention is better than cure, there's no tangible benefit to banning 4x4's other than making a minority feel better that they've irritated someone who probably works very hard to pay for the car they drive. |

No.. and yes I do drive a 4x4 as my family's only vehicle and live in rural cornwall I visit an urban area perhaps twice a year if banned I would no longer bother, perhaps the answer to your problem is 1. get a life. 2. suggest that if you live in a urban area such as London you cannot have a large vehicle registered at your address as you are required by law to register it at your main residence perhaps this would help? |

While I agree that 4x4's have no use in urban areas, we'd probably be infringing on people's rights if we were to do something like that. But seriously, what use does a huge 4x4 Suburban or Tahoe have in a metro area? How many of these people ACTUALLY use there for the all-terrain/off-road use for which they were built? Not many I'm sure. But it still doesn't mean that they don't have a right to drive them. |

WHY? freedom of choice mate and what you want to spend your wages on! There are a lot of old bangers on the road & "Carefull Drivers" that cause more holdups & pollution.
Why do you want to ban 4X4 anyway? |

no! urban areas are full of farmers and hills and general rough terrain! lol seriously tho, they arnt needed and i'm willing to bet none of the cars have ever seen off road. its a status symbol more than anything. its a case of look what i've got. they're dangerous and if in an accident it usually makes it a fatal accident. ban em. get petition going on the government website. i'd sign it. |

Great Idea better still stop all Mothers taking their kids to school in 4 x 4 and Mpv's that will ease the congestion problem at a stroke . lol |

|
4x4's are fine if they are needed. I understand it if the people are actually going to make proper use of them that is using them on rough terrain, and farmers etc need them. But people living in urban areas have no need to have them, they just clog up the roads and take up all the parking spaces. |

 |
Considering that many towns are not designed for such large volume of vehicles it would make sense to reduce the number in our town`s. And many 4x4s are driven by people who lack the skills that such vehicles require, and on to that poor design for pedestrian safety. |
