Should we just accept that space travel is dangerous?
|
In all of humankind's attempts at exploring new frontiers, there have been inherent dangers. Should astronauts not make their own choice whether to risk their lives or not? If nobody got hurt that would be ideal, of course, but this planet won't last forever and we need to try something, surely? Nobody wants to die, but isn't it better if it's for a purpose?

like my "cow lick"?

we already know it's dangerous that's why there's so much done that costing so much more these days...
problem is politics.. we're using a defunct space craft and the entire space program is in need of a very serious overhaul.. that's why now private institutions are getting their feet wet with their own programs.
of course it's dangerous... but how can man further themselves without some challenge in life?
would we not have penicillin if one didn't take a risk?
there's so much at cost and so much to benefit from... there's people who are willing to risk that... so relax. |

Nothing we do will really wipe out the earth. Everything we do nature will fix. We as Humans may not be around when Earth rebuilds itself but it will. |

Astronauts DO choose. Do you think someone holds a gun to their head? They CHOOSE to be Astronauts.
EVERYTHING we do has dangers. Did you know that? |

If we gave up doing everything in life because there was dangers attached to it, everyone would need to live in a bubble.
If you look at it that way, people can die just as easily crossing the street, going for a swim or being struck by lightning but that does not stop people from doing what they want to do.
If astronauts want to go explore new frontiers in space, its no different then people going deep under water scuba diving where they can be attacked by many dangerous fish and have other dangers arise.
We can't live our lives in fear. If someone has an interest in something (ie skydiving) they will not allow dangers to stop them from accomplishing what they want to. And if its for a higher purpose, then all the better.
What differnece is it going into space and explorering for the sake of earth's inhabitants or going off to fight in a war in the name of your country? Both are dangerous, yet both are for a reason. |

The Earth will survive longer than the human race. By the time the Earth would die, the sun would burn out, the Andromeda Galaxy would collide with us, the human race would be extinct.
Space travel is very dangerous, much more dangerous than anything here on Earth is, and in ways that life on Earth is not. We won't however let that danger keep us from trying. We have had accidents and deaths already and they haven't stopped yet. |

You're wrong and I know it.

did you just say the planet wont last forever? do you honestly think humans at this or even into the future will have the technology and means to try and find another earth or create space colonies? and why bother? take care of the Earthe and it will take care of you. |

I think there are just some things people will never know, but that's not to say that we shouldn't attempt to further technology and uncover "the secrets of the universe", as they say.
I do think that we should carry on with space travel and discovery, but we should accept the fact that finding something to replace Earth is not realistically in sight. |

I think that we can go out in space and take pics of the earth and stuff, but if Earth is meant to smash into the sun in however billion trillion years, then so be it.
Who knows? Maybe we're making space for another species? |

Space travel is often cited as more dangerous than just about any other form of getting around. |
