Common Sense

Absolutely not. My father was in an accident where the car roof was crushed down to the bottom of the window line. If he were wearing a seat belt, he would have died. Some people who's car flips fly out and are absolutely fine, but if they would have stayed in the car they would have died. Of course the opposite happens also, but my point is, when you get in a car accident it is always a matter of luck. The government does not have the right to tell me that I should have never been born, that my father should have obeyed the law and died, or anything of the sort. I don't mind when they make suggestions, but they can't tell people that lived cause they didn't wear one that they should be good little drones and die. it's all a matter of luck. and my f-ing business if I do or not. |

No. It should be a personal choice. I was in an accident the one time I didnt wear one and the officer said had I been wearing it I would be dead. |

It doesn't matter, stupid people won't wear them anyway. And then when they get killed in the accident we will be better off without their genes.. |

Absolutely not. Not as long as there are states that don't require helmets on Motorcycle drivers. That's a double standard. |

i was involved in a horrific crash five weeks ago and thank god for seat belts although seat belts can cause serious injuries too at high impact it caused me to have terrible bruising to my breast and tummy and broke my sternum and 2 ribs but rather that than go through the windscreen it was speeders that caused the crash they died instantly |

I dont think it should be forced, but everyone should wear their seat belts if it is comfortable for them. I personally wear mine whenever i am the driver, but when i am the passenger i would rarely wear it. Also i was recently in an accident and i was the driver, my shoulder was really sore from the belt holding me in place, but if i was not wearing it my head would have went through the window., if not worse. And since i have worn my belt no matter if i was the driver or not.
So my suggestion is everyone should wear a seat belt for their own safety whether you are the driver or passenger, because it may save your life. |

In my opinion no, and I have never quite understood how seat belt laws are constitutional.
Generally speaking, laws are designed to protect the rights and lives of others. I have yet to understand how me not wearing my seatbelt affects anyone else's life, liberty or pursuit of happiness.
It has been argued that you could injure someone else is you are ejected from the vehicle, but I find this to be a highly unlikely scenario. It has also been argued that if you are a parent and you are injured or killed you are affecting the rights of your child....the biggest problem I have with that argument is that children under the age of 18 aren't afforded the same rights as adults anyway. I would put that one more in the irresponsible category... |

People get pretty stupid about this. One in a hundred thousand accidents are the type where you would be safer without a belt, but people roll the dice and use that one as an excuse for not wearing a belt. Look, an unbelted body can fly right out the windshield and splatter all over the road. That is a horrid mess for for children to come across, not to mention the poor people that have to clean the guts up. Nobody, and I mean nobody has the right to subject others to that. I was in a terrible accident. Without a belt, my body would have been splattered half on the road and half on a truck. Anybody that wants to die violently should just jump out of a helicopter way up in polar bear country where nobody has to see the mess and a bear will have a good meal. |

NO. It says the the government OWNS us and I thought slavery was abolished. Another piece of B.S. sold to the American public.
I think it is a good idea to wear one, mind you, but this becoming an income center for the government is just obscene. |

YES. There are obviously a lot of people here who have answered your question that don't understand that THERE IS NO RIGHT TO DRIVE. Every state in the union has decided that operating a motor vehicle is a PRIVILEGE -- NOT a right -- that will only be extended to those people who show that they can safely operate a motor vehicle. That's why you have to get a LICENSE in order to drive, and when you sign up for a license you're signing a contract in which you agree to obey ALL the rules of the road and ALL rules regarding motor vehicles that have been instated for your safety. Face it, the people who ***** and whine about seatbelts are not mature adults -- they want to do whatever they want to do and feel they have the right to do whatever they want with nobody else telling them what to do or holding them accountable for their actions. These folks need to grow up.
P.S.: A direct quote from my uncle, who is a 35+ year veteran of the Michigan State Police: "I have never had to unbuckle a dead driver." |

Well it's kind of like the drug laws or suicide laws I guess we don't have the right to hurt ourselves. But I say if the offending driver has good insurance that well pay for all their medical expenses, so that it's not a burden to tax payers. They should be able to forget about the set belt if the chose. |

YES!!! If you have ever seen the result of an accident where the driver/passengers were not wearing seat belts, you would always wear yours, backseat passengers included. We put our children in car seats to protect them in the chance of an accident, why not protect yourself the same way.
It has been proven that seat belt use greatly reduces the risk of death and serious injury in the event of a car accident.
This is not an issue of Government intrusion, it is an issue of your brains splattered across the road. |

It doesn't matter. It's a done deal and you're beating a dead horse. They like to say it keeps health costs down, but I don't recall the government paying hospital charges for anybody. |

We are required to do many things for our own good. The cases where not wearing a seatbelt is beneficial are only 5% of accidents. The other 95% they save lives. If the driver chooses not to wear a belt, he is less likely to be able to maintain a modicum of control in an emergency, therefore endangering his passengers and other innocent people.
Having it as a law on the books allows police to stop a suspicious car with no other charge against it, then find out the driver is a murderer or the car is stolen, things totally unrelated to the original stop. Many major criminals have been caught as the result of a simple traffic stop. |

I always, always wear my seat belt. I find them very uncomfortable espcially the vehicle I drive ALL the time, therefore, I put the seat belt not over my shoulder as should be, but under my boobs. Is this still considered wearing a seat belt the correct way? Probably not, but I cannot wear it over my should, it bugs the hell out of me. I have a corvette that has THE most comfortable seat belt. Also when driving by a cop and the seat belt is not over my should, to them it looks like I'm not wearing one, but I am. What is the answer to that one.?? I make sure my whole family is always buckled up. But as far as me being the driver.......undecided? |
