Should you turn off your cell phone at the gas pump?

There are plenty of people who are quick to say it's just a myth, but I'm not about to jump on that bandwagon. Think about this:

every major gas station chain has posted warnings advising you to not use your cell phone or any other electronic device while pumping. They wouldn't say it if they didn't have a reason to.

anything with a battery has the potential to spark, overheat or otherwise act as a point of ignition, we've all seen examples of this in everyday life. And anytime you can smell gas while pumping it, that means that there are vapors escaping (that are rising up to the level of your nose - right where you hold your phone!)

It isn't just your own life you'd be taking into your hands, it's the lives of everyone else at the gas station.

To be safe, it's best to just shut it off. :)

There has never been one fire at a gas station attributed to the use of a cellular telephone. It is also just as dangerous off as it is on or in use anyways. Static electricity as mentioned is the most dangerous thing at a gas station, don't get in and out of your car repeatedly it's the biggest risk of fire, aside from leaving the car running or smoking.

NEVER NEVER i always talk when pumping gas nothing happends the power is to small
didn't you saw the tv show mythbuster they put the phone inside a box full of gas and call ,call keep calling nothing happend

the poblem is your clothes and the seat material in your car when is cold not the cellphone

PEOPLE CELLPHONES DON'T HAVE SPARKS IS NOT A PLUG

?
IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE MYTH OF CELL PHONES CAUSING AN EXPLOSION WHILE PUMPING GAS,IT IS UNTRUE.

While you don't really need to turn it off, I would void talking on it while pumping the gas. Cell phones are shown not to give off a spark that would start a fire...

The most dangerous cause of gas pump fires, is from people without leather seats gettiing in and out of the car as their pumping, this gives them a static charge... BUT if you discharge by touching a part of the car away from the gas tank, you'll be fine.

According to MythBusters, you don't have to.

However, I would stay off the phone when paying for gas!

yes or at least not answer it

Yes. I can't believe there are still people out there that don't know this. It can cause a static spark and ignite the gas fumes. You don't want to find out what happens after that. Just be on the safe side and turn it off for the few minutes you're at the station.

Sadly enough, tons of studies have been done on this exact subject. If you ever get bored, you can even watch it on Mythbusters on TLC. The University I go to actually did one such study. The entire idea of that occurring is absurd. The electrical charge within a cell phone is in no way powerful enough to cause a spark large enough to ignite the gas fumes. The reason they say not to talk on the phone while pumping gas is actually because it takes your attention off what you should be doing. I guess there are people out there who are so bad at multitasking they can't talk and pump at the same time...lol.

Yes the minor radio signal too close to gas fumes exiting the nozzle can cause instantaneous combustion...

what most people do not know is the flash point temperature for gasoline is a mere 72 degrees and under perfect conditions it can nearly spontaneous ignite by that alone...

luckily perfect condtions in physics for some things do not occur often

Yes, because there is a remote chance that an electrical current can go through the phone and you causing the tank to explode. It is very remote but has happened.

Cranium adiposum
That would depend entirely on just how flame resistant you are, but it's not a bad idea since electronic equipment can and does spark occasionally. It isn't quite like holding a flint and striker, but snopes be damned, I'm bound to try it. But why stop there? Turn off the phone of the guy standing at pump #4 and see what explodes then.

by all rights, yes.
