Sirens and Lights? ?

My father and I went to the HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS and bought a revolving amber emergency car/truck light for his Toyota for $15 and Mom was a little steamed because it is illegal to use on the road. I told her we NEVER used it on the road, only dirt trails. We also bought a siren system with 4 diffrent modes at the same place and I KNOW She woiuld be mad about that (I know it is illegal to use to move traffic. I wont use it in that way. We live in the woods and need it when It is foggy or hard to see. How can I tell her about the siren and have her as least steamed as possible? ( The siren was only $29.99 a good buy Online they are 100-700 bucks)

Your mother is right- you don't need the light and you definitely don't need the siren. I've been in Emergency Medical Services for 10yrs working on and around real emergency vehicles with real lights & sirens and I have NEVER felt the need to use ANY warning lights, nor have I sounded the siren as a warning during normal driving in fog. The most I've used is my hazards when it's really bad and I'm going slow. Ask yourself this- Have I ever seen real emergency vehicles driving around with lights and sirens just because of the fog? The answer is-NO!

The reason the other sirens you were looking at cost hundreds of dollars is because their output is 100W-200W and they are built to take the abuse of public safety work. The "siren" you bought is a TOY with an output of a whopping 20W.

Also in many states merely possessing the lights and/or siren in the vehicle is illegal, you don't even have to be using it.

That is the lamest excuse I have ever heard for having flashing lights and siren, I would love to hear the judge when you tell him that. Have you ever won a Darwin award?

It's always nice to be able to do whatever you want, until you get caught and slapped for it.
Most places have laws regarding the use of lights (ALL colors).
Same goes for sirens.
Cops didn't enforce the laws for amber lights. Every idiot with a plow runs lights on the road - in direct violation of the law.
Now politicians want PERMITS !!! Just so I can continue to use mine legally.

You don't need lights and sirens to use on dirt trails. If you fog is a problem, invest in some fog lights. Lights and sirens are tools, not toys and should be treated as such. Those items at HF are cheap because they were intended to be used as toys rather than the rigors of emergency services. Maybe your mom has a point on both items.

Just by having the siren mounted in a vehicle that is not licensed as an emergency vehicle is against the law. If an officer would see it, you or whoever is driving will face serious fines, possible criminal charges of impersonation and the siren will be confiscated and destroyed by the police.
If you like to throw money away, (because that is what you are doing once the police confiscate the illegal siren- you will not get your money back that you spent for it) I bet there's a lot of people on Y!A that could use some of it for bills.

As for the Amber flashing light, in most states those are reserved for construction vehicles, DOT, wreckers, USPS Rural Route mail carriers & sometimes private or mall security vehicles. You may not get in trouble for the light. But if it is red or blue, and the police see it and the siren, you will most likely be charged with impersonating a police officer, which is a serious crime & you could face jail.

Wouldn't a set of fog lights have been a little more practical ?
