Slippery Roads?

Is it true that the roads are more slippery after the first rain of the wet season? Like if it hasn't rained in a really long time will the roads be more slippery than after it has rained a few times?

That is true. Oil builds up on the road during long spells of good weather. Once a decent rain comes, all the oil is being rinsed off the surface and makes the road slippery/ |

sort of.
the oil in the road floats to the top of the water.
Oil is more slippery than water.
However, i have not heard this about the first rain of the season, but about the first minute or 2 of rain, as opposed to after an hour of rain. |

yes, because all the dirt, grime, dust, etc. has collected onto the road. when the first rain hits it gets all this wet...thus making it much more slippery. |

Yes. The road collects oil from cars that leak. After a long period of time without rain, the oil on the road accumulates. |

it depends on the road type e.g mud track or tarmac surface i would'nt imagin it makes much differance on tarmac unless the rain had bought mud onto the road but it would make a mud track slipperyer (dont ask me how to spell that word properly :D ) |

it only takes about a week worth of dry weather for oil to build up. once the rain starts, depending on how hard its coming down, it could take as long as 15 minutes to wash the oil off. until then, slow way down, and take corners gently. the worst parts are going to be at intersections, off ramps, and at the end of off ramps.
even after this time, if the tires dont have any or very little tread, it will act like its on ice. what u dont see can kill u. on a bike, i can clearly see the oil when it starts to rain. its like mini-rainbows, and for us, intersections become treacherous. give us plenty of room in the rain. u can easily drop a bike if ur boot winds up stepping in washed up oil. been there, done it a couple of times. |

Yep I never experienced it too much until I moved to California. Where we can go six or eight months with zero rain.
I didn't know what the big deal was. Until I spun-out on it a couple of times. Now I aways take the first rain serious. It's almost as bad as black ice. |

Absolutely, positively, YES. That first rain, is when it's the most slippery. Even a diesel truck could peel out. |

storm

yes it is the rain pulls out oils from the road |

This makes sence...When the roads have been exposed to moisture recently, they will absorb water more quickly, meaning that the roads will have less surface water. However, after a long period of dry weather, the ground contains very little moisture, and rain water accumulates on the road.
You can see the same effect with a moist sponge vs. a dry sponge...a moist sponge will absorb water more quickly.
Hope this helps :) |

They are worse than black ice. The nasty oil slick that rises up after a rain is worse than black ice and will kill you if you aren't obsessive-compulsive. |
