Slower drivers in left lane?
Find answers to your legal question.

Slower drivers in left lane?

I see a lot of people complaining about this on here, and I just wanted to ask, how do you people usually deal with these slower drivers? Do you tailgate them, flash your headlights at them, etc? Or are you patient with them?

If you have been following them for a mile or so and they still haven't moved over, do you CAREFULLY pass them on the right? I'm just trying to get an idea of how most people deal with this situation.

EDIT: I know passing on the right is technically not legal, or safe for that matter (especially if you try to pass a truck on the right). But if these slower drivers are bothering you that much, I would say passing them on the right is safer than tailgating them.

When I am traveling behind a slow moving vehicle in the left lane, I approach them but fall back to refrain from tailgating. If you're courteous to annoyingly slow drivers, one of two things will happen: they move right and allow you to pass or you have to pass on the right to get around them. Here in Atlanta, home of stubborn left lane campers, I usually have to pass on the right. Driving in the left lane too slowly is a form of impeding traffic flow and I heard in some states, this is a citable offense. Tailgating is never safe and honking the horn and flashing the high beams only aggravates the situation and incites road rage.

If they don't pull over into the right lane and there's little or no traffic, I pass on the right. If I realize that I only think they're slow because I'm actually speeding (lol) I'm just patient with them.

On a two lane road yesterday (one going each direction) there were several really slow (10+ under the limit) out of state drivers. It was a double yellow line and this guy in front of me passed him anyway! I'm certainly not that gutsy... I just waited until he pulled into a turnout (which was like 10 miles later....)

I know in Pa. there is a law that you can be ticketed for driving in the left lane mile after mile. the left lane is reserved for overtaking slower vehicles in normal conditions. The recommendation is to be in the left lane not much more than a mile until you move to the right or you could be subject to a ticket I will also say I have never heard of a ticket being issued for this,

NC
You can pass from right but by chance if there is an accident - you will be at fault.

The Province I live in allows passing on the right. No problem except that I don't think it's safe; especially if your passing out of Province drivers.
If I come up on a slower driver I just fall back a bit and activate my left turn signal. They eventually get the message and pull over. That seldom happens here. Drivers in this part of the Country are obscenely polite and would never dream of blocking another driver. And it helps that our speed limit is 68 MPH which is more than a comfortable speed for us.
I never use my horn and I do not flash my hhigh-beams Other drivers have been known to react 'badly' to those forms of communication.

Er, where did you get the STUPID idea that passing on the right is not legal or safe? (or what the British call "undertaking" is perfectly legal in North America.)

You can pass on the left, on the right, or if you can figure out how to do it, by going over top.

Honk/blink for a little bit to see if they get the hint and move over. Then carefully pass on the right if they don't get it.

Depending on the traffic laws in your jurisdiction, the slower driver may be the one in the wrong - particularly, if they're going under the speed limit. It's a good idea to check with the appropriate authorities (State Patrol, Highway Patrol, whatever) to make sure, though.

UGH!! I totally want to scream at these snails that jump on the freeway and barely have their foot on the freaking accelerator!!! I've seen people walk faster than some of these snails behind the wheel!! I just wait and try to past when it is safe to do so. Sorry, but slow or scared drivers should not get on the freeway!

There is absolutely no law saying that you have to drive over the speed limit in the left hand lane. There is also no law saying that it's illegal to pass on the right. The illegality of passing on the right comes from driving over the speed limit, not the passing persay.

Likewise, if you are driving over the speed limit in the left hand lane, you are also breaking the law. Though the lane is reserved for passing as a common courtesy, there are no laws that make this so, therefore, it's not really okay to do ANYTHING to these drivers.

Tailgating is going to get you into an accident and it'll be your fault. More so, when someone is tailgating me I actually have a tendency to slow down, not speed up, it's just annoying. These people aren't technically doing anything wrong just because they're not breaking the law by speeding. Unless they live in Quebec, of course, where there are both maximum AND minimum speed limits on highways.

I usually tailgate them for a little....rev my engine, and just get on their *** ....if that doesn't work...I usually cut them off to the right or left depending on the roads...within inches so they can feel the air rub against their car.
