Yes...there is a possibility to start a fire smokin a cig but HIGHLY unprobable. It would require a large amount of compacted gas fumes and a small amout of sparks to fire up! |

smoking at the gas pump is pretty darn stupid.
gasoline vapor mixed with air in the right concentration will ignite.
not liquid gasoline, gasoline vapor.
If you can smell gasoline, there is vapor in the air. It's just a matter of getting the right mixture.
Which can randomly happen at any time, around gas pumps.
======================================...
mythbusters busted the myth that you can ignite gasoline on the ground by tossing a cigarette butt into it. Not a puddle, just some gas spilled on the ground. |

Its defintily not worth the risk. YOU CANT STOP SMOKING FOR THE 3 MINUTES IT TAKES TO FILL UR TANK. I know its highly improbable but theres still a chance and its most likely not worth it. Unless of course u want to be the first human roman candle. Go ahead and do it if u want, at least ur family isnt gonna have to decide whether to cremate u or not |

Yes it is possible to start a fire and or explode a car by smoking a cigarette due to the vapors that are coming from the fuel....... |

its not a very good idea I've seen fires start from static electricity at the pumps before |

I knew a guy who smoked as he pumped gas. He worked there and I asked him if he did it because he knew it wouldn't blow up.....he repsonded that he just didn't care.

If it was diesel fuel then it definitely wouldn't ignite. Having a burning anything in that close a proximity to highly flammable liquid is just plain stupidity. Natural selection at its finest. As for the myth busters they are great guys that do more good than harm. And besides, the show is a hoot and a half. Perhaps the myth they busted was regarding diesel fuel which you could throw a lit cigarette into and it would just fizzle and go out. |

i think it is stupid because there is bound to be drops of petrol on the floor from when the filling thing is removed from the car's tank.
i wouldnt do it.
the stupid one is not being allowed to use a mobile phone |

Ive done it before, its highly unlikely a cigarette in your mouth will ignite fumes coming from the fill neck. If the cigarette is directly near the fillneck, look out, it may blow. Once the vapors escape the fill neck, they become widely dispersed and are very unlikely to be ignited |

I reckon its very unlikely, but thats too likely in my book |

yep he's right. NOW MAYBE if a spill was to happen like in the old days when gas tank openings were wide open and the filler nozzles were not like they are today. Then maybe a fire could happen. I think smoking around gas is a dumb idea but not as dumb as when people especially women get in and out of the car while the pump is on and filling the gas. The highly charged static spark is perfect for an explosion. This getting in and out of the car scenario happens all the time and there should be a warning about getting in and out of the car. And cell phones have caused fires and explosions, also placing a gas can on the bed of a truck while filling it causes explosions, also thru static electricity.. But I have never herd of an explosion or fire due to a cigarette or cigar yet. |
