Snow tires that you can have studs added later if you need to?
Find answers to your legal question.

Snow tires that you can have studs added later if you need to?

driving from a warm climate to a cold one. I would like to put on snow tires in Arizona and drive to Colorado. When I get there I would like to add studs to the same tires. Is that possible?

yes, i used to install the studs all the time

jilly
i think its possible, but only if those same tyres had studs before, which had been taken out for some reason.
and if you get studs put on the tyre ( that had studs before), it could be quite expensive. so it might be better if you just bought new tyres that have studs.

you can't put studs on a tyre that's never had studs, because they won't have the holes for them.

If the tire can except them but it is very expensive..

Snow tires are the most common solution for driving in snow regions. They are designed to provide maximum traction in snow.

The aggressive tread design provides traction when the condition of the road surface has unfavorable traction characteristics (snow, sleet, ice or mud).

You will be fine and if you need anything just buy a set of chains, easier and cheaper...

Colorado chain law applies to every state highway, federal highway and interstate throughout the state.

When the chain law is in effect, drivers will see signs along the roadway indicating which vehicles should chain-up. In some areas of the state, lighted variable message signs will also alert drivers of the chain-up information.

Metal chains must consist of two circular metal loops, one on each side of the tire, connected by not less than nine evenly spaced chains across the tread.

Yes studs can be added to most snow tires after they have been driven some distance, up to about 10% of the wear life of the tire ( 90% tread remaining) - however the difference in cost of having studs added after the fact compared to purchasing factory studded tires is substantial. If you are planning on moving to CO and staying there I suggest that you wait until you are there to buy the studded tires. As long as your tires are not in real worn condition and you can avoid driving in bad winter conditions for a few more days, if that is the case I would choose that option. If your tire condition requires you install new tires before you leave then by all means get good snow tires installed before you go. I recommend the Cooper Wintermaster, Mastercraft Glacier Grip or Hankook I-Pike snow tires, any of them will perform very well in the most extreme snow and ice conditions even without the use of studs.
