Speed Camera Van on Opposite side of road. Has it caught me?

Hi Guys

Just want a little advice as to whether I may/may not have been caught speeding?

I was driving up a 30mph hill doing about 35mph, on the opposite side of the road tucked behind a wall was a mobile camera van (with its back facing down the hill). My question is: Was the van catching people coming down the hill or people coming up the hill? Can it catch people in both lanes? Surely if someone was coming down the hill at the same time as me going up then the camera view of my car would be obscured?

speed camera vans normally point out that someone is speeding to the police waiting a few hundred yards away.

Generally the camera points out from the rear of the van.

Also, I wouldn't expect you to be 'done' for 35mph in a 30mph limit

Did this van have an open hatch in the back, facing you as you approached? Then it is very likely it was working the traffic going uphill, they work vehicles approaching the camera. Doubt if you'll be "done" at that speed, you were almost certainly doing less than your speedo said and there's normally a tolerance too of 2mph plus 10%, i.e up to 35 in that limit. Not always, but normally.

I'm not familar with your road and speed camera laws but here in Australia a speed camera is not allowed to opperate taking pictures of people going down hill. There are various other aspects which effect the legality of speeding fines such as equipment calibration etc. A friend of the family who is an instrumementation engineer has advised a number of people on how to fight fines and he says if you're only a coule of KM/H over the limit it's easy to fight the fine and win. Do a search on fighting speeding fines, there may be an avenue of escape. Also, if you have had an exceptionally long period of time with no traffic offences then a letter asking for leniency sometimes works, that is how it works in Australia anyway.

It depends on the partnership operating the camera, generally speaking there is one camera inside being operated by a person who points it in the direction of those who are believed to be exceeding the speed limit, whatever the direction of travel. The 10% +2 thing is a GUIDELINE, you cannot count on the partnership not prosecuting for that speed. The ONLY way to know if you were caught is to phone up the local partnership to where you were caught, or wait up to 14 days from the date of offence to see if you receive a ticket

The mobile camera vans have 2 cameras fitted i would say that he had one catching traffic speeding up hill and one catching speeders downhill.

If a speeding camera is on the opposite side of the road that you are traveling then the answer is no. You will not be caught by a speeding camera on the opposite side. The first thing to note is that speeding cameras catch violators from the back. What that means is, if you are speeding the camera will take the picture of the back license plate. Cameras generally do not take photos of the front license plate. Also as I said, cameras do not take photos across lanes. You must be in the lane where the camera is. You shouldn't worry about it. Besides the law says that you are allowed to go at least 5 mph above the posted speed limit.
