Speed Limit 65 mph?

Don't listen to any other speed demons who answered this question. Do what you're doing right now. I happen to do the same thing. I follow the posted speed limit exactly. On the interstate, I go 65. Rural: 55, etc. Here's why. The posted speed limit is not just a suggestion. It was determined by specialists in speed vs. driver control and by road conditions. It is also the ideal speed for fuel efficiency. Many people don't realize that the faster their constant speed is, the more fuel they waste and yet some still complain about the price of gas. It is also designed for maximum control around curves and bends in the road. And chances are, the people who do 80 on the freeway have probably been caught multiple times in the past. You're right; it is the speeders who put sensible drivers like you in danger. Just forget them and concentrate on your destination because, in the end, they'll be wasting thousands of dollars on extra fuel and traffic tickets and you won't. Drive safe.

Obviously there is a temptation of driving faster, but your not doing yourself any favors by going against the law. You need to stay at or near the speed limit, everytime you are over is a chance you can be caught. It is also illegal to even drive 65 mphr if it is unsafe for current weather conditions. By doing what your doing now you are not only making life better for yourself but for everyone else following the rules. Let the speed demons do what they want, you dont want to go to traffic school for doing something you know is wrong.

The sign is to make drivers aware of what has been determined to be a safe speed on that particular stretch of road, and you're right, all the morons that exceed the posted speed limit are endangering safe, smart drivers like you and me, there just aren't enough cops to enforce the laws.

You're right about speeders putting other drivers in danger, but here in Detroit we have the opposite problem. We get drivers who do 55 MPH in the left lane (when the speed limit is 65 MPH or 70 MPH) and they absolutely will not move over to the right for anything; not even for the police. I'm all for higher fines and stiffer penalties for speeding, but I'm also in favor of suspension or revocation of someone's drivers license if they can't figure out that they need to be over to the right because they're going too slow and impeding traffic.

The basic speed law says that you drive a safe speed for the current conditions of the roadway. The posted speed limit is the safest speed in ideal conditions.

And yes you are supposed to go with the flow of traffic. Can you get a ticket for speeding just because you are going with the flow of traffic? YES. I have seen this happen. There was a large group of cars (all of them going about the same speed, but over the speed limit). The police randomly selected 5 of them to pull over and give speeding tickets. You are the safest person out there, you are going the posted speed limit (which also happens to be the SAFEST speed in ideal conditions).
The point of posting the sign is so smart roadway users, like you, will see and obey the sign. Also it gives the police (if they're ever in the area) a way to ask "Didn't you see that sign back there that said 65 mph?".

If you are driving slower than 80% of those around you then you are not driving a car you are driving an obstruction and it is you who in fact is jeapordizing the safety of the drivers around you.

If you know how to do it properly, there's nothing wrong with driving 80mph. The speed limit dictates what is legal, not what is safe. Just look at the Autobahn.
