Stopping at a stop sign?

u know when u go to walmart and when you are about to leave the walmart parking lot how they have their own stop signs?? for example when i leave walmart, before u can even get to the exit area, they have stop signs (the same ones u see on public roadways).

at walmart i alway stop, but here's the thing that i'm wondering about.. I thought I would know the answer since I'm wanting to take the civil service test to become a cop, but I don't know this answer. suppose someone DOES NOT stop and they blow the stop sign, can a police officer still issue a citation? Think about this for a second. say if u put a stop sign at the end of your driveway. Now everyone who leaves the driveway has to make a complete stop. If i put a stop sign in my driveway, do i have to make a complete stop? if i dont', can i get cited? so now back to the walmart question...please explain the answer.

When entering the flow of traffic, you must ensure that it is safe to do so. If you roll through the parking lot stop sign and enter an empty road, I don't think you've done anything wrong. However, if you enter the roadway and cause another car to swerve or break hard, you may be guilty of failing to yield the right of way.

Because the stop sign is on private property, I don't believe it is governed by the same laws that apply to a stop sign at a regular intersection.

well, you cant just put a stop sign anywhere you want,
you have to get permission to put it there
but, since its on private property, i dont think the cop can do anything about it

its a stop sign, it says STOP for a reason. it doesn't say stop only if you feel like it,. if you go blowing through one of those stop signs and you hit and injure/kill a person getting a citation for blowing a stop sign will be the least of your problems. they put those stop signs where people cross to come out of the store. your suppose to give them the right of way, how much time does it really take to stop and then go again, no different then a stop sign on the street,

I don't think they can give you a ticket unless you did it in a wreck-less manner such as cutting off another driver.

You have to stop. Walmart doesn't just make their own signs. These signs are owned and enforced by the town or city. Before Walmart opens their store, they need to file paperwork and request these signs from the town. So these signs are real signs and you can get a ticket. You are actually more likely to get a ticket at one of these signs because there are always loads of people in the parking lots. If you were going to only stop at one stop sign, I would make sure that I fully stopped at a stop sign in a crowded parking lot.

now if you just put a stop sign in your driveway, it would not be an official sign. If you actually had a REAL stop sign in your driveway, then it would be stolen and you could be charged with that.

Wal-mart doesn't install those stop signs... the DOT does. Therefore they are regulatory and are subject to traffic laws. The DOT would not put a stop sign in your driveway so that comparison is moot.

A private residency is different from a place of business. And you can get cited in a wal-mart parking lot. Just like people may get cited for reckless driving in a parking lot for doing donuts. Stop signs are often necessary so people dont get hit walking into the store and accidents dont happen.

I would say they can give you a ticket because if you blow a stop sign you are in dangering lives.

Now if your seat belt isn't buckled I think you can fight that one even though you are in dangering your life.

I always thought about that too.

You can definitely receive a citation and fine for a traffic incident in a retail parking lot, and for that matter in the parking lot of an arena, stadium,or railroad station. The citations may also require a court appearance.

For that matter, I don't think you can have a stop sign at the end of your driveway.
