Stopping distance of a car?

Well the stopping distance does depend on the weight of the car, and the conditions such as whether it is rainy, icy, or conditions that do not impeded progress. But the general rule is, to decrease your speed depending upon the situation by at least 5 to 10 mph. Here is a formula to help you get the stopping distance of a car.

xÂ² Ã· 20 + x = Overall stopping distance in feet.

x = speed

For example: If you are traveling at 30 mph

30Â² Ã· 20 + 30 =

(30 x 30) Ã· 20 + 30 =

900 Ã· 20 + 30 = 75 ft.

Use this formula to get the distance for stopping as long as you have a given speed the car is traveling.

@20mph:- 20 + (20 x 2) divided by 2 = 20 + 20 = 40feet

@30mph:- 30 + (30 x 3) divided by 2 = 30 + 45 = 75feet

@40mph:- 40 + (40 x 4) divided by 2 = 40 + 80 = 120feet

@50mph:- 50 + (50 x 5) divided by 2 = 50 + 125 = 175feet

@60mph:- 60 + (60 x 6) divided by 2 = 60 + 180 = 240feet

@70mph:- 70 + (70 x 7) divided by 2 = 70 + 245 = 315feet

In wet..... times 2
On ice... times 10

For metres, divide all answers again by 3 and that will give you a good enough rough idea... ie. pick the answer closest to the one you were working out in your multiple choice selection.

PS. BSMGuy is meaning by saying there's no Overall Stopping Distance for wet conditions, it would be true in the sense that you have no indication of how wet (deep) the water on the road is, which would effect the answer. However, it would be recognised by answering it would be double in relation to a dry road. They don't say a dry road with dry dirt on it, which would effect that answer too if you get my meaning!!

read up[ the highway code for the main speeds ie 30, 40 and 70 these other formula are too complicated. snow and ice ten times the normal stopping distances rain /wet 4 times normal stopping distances. good luck

Here's a simple way to remember, all my pupils use it for their theory.
The speed limits used in the question are always
20,30,40,50,60,70mph

So to remember the overall stopping distance use this

At 20mph x 2 = 40ft
30mph x 2.5 = 75ft
40mph x 3 = 120ft
50mph x 3.5 = 175ft
60mph x 4 = 240ft
70mph x 4.5 = 315ft

The multiple choice answers will be shown in mtrs, with FT in brackets.
So if you want to work out stopping distance at 50mph think back to 20 x 2, 30 x 2.5 ....etc.. and there you have it...
Try it, it will work.

There is no overall stopping distances in wet roads.
