I have no cite, just watch CSI a lot :-)

They do it to determine cause of death. Perhaps the person was dead or incapacitated when the car crashed, and the crash was a secondary cause of death. Maybe they were drunk and hit the railing or crossed a median? What if they were suffering a heart attack?

Insurance companies would love to know if the person was all kinds of drunk and hit 5 cars, a school bus, and a storefront because then they wouldn't have to pay for the repairs!
