Talking on a cell phone while driving... do you think it should be legal or illegal?

Its already illegal in several states. Its been illegal for quite awhile in NY but we still drive like bats out of hell.

I would say that the practice of not using a hands free device should be illegal. Even when using a hands free device people still become engrossed in their conversation that they drive under the speed limit, weave/drift in their lane, run red lights, stop short behind other cars... too many examples to list. The sad part is that these were things that I saw while driving today!!!

On a side note drinking coffee or other non alcoholic beverage, changing a CD or Mp3, talking to a passenger are all distracting for a FRACTION of the time that most people who habitually talk on the phone... talk on the phone for. You can easily have an accident in the blink of an eye, think about the odds when you detach yourself from the task at hand; which is operating your vehicle in a manner that allows you and everyone else on the road to make it home again.

It absolutely should be illegal for talking on cell phone while driving. However, in case of a quick got lost of direction phone call wouldn't necessarily be banned. It irritates me when people keep blabbing an hour conversation while driving. Sometime I'm wondering what is so important to talk for hours even in traffic.

I think it should be illegal. Your brain's attention can only handle so many tasks, the more tasks to handle, the less attention paid to each task. We have all seen people smoking, talking on the phone AND driving. I think it is slightly acceptable with a hands-free option, otherwise, it should be 100% illegal.

It should be illegal because I myself ever pass through red light while using phone, I think all depend of the conversation.
With hand free I'm OK no problem.

Anything that intereferes with the operation of a motor vehicle should be illegal. That includes talking on cell phones, (even with "blue tooth" technology), reading, putting on make-up, eating or drinking (even coffee), and searching under the seat for the other CD you want to hear.

In NY, you'll get a hefty fine plus ponys if you're caught talking on a cell phone while driving, and I think that should be instituted nationwide.

i dont think it should be illegal because only an idiot cant drive and talk on a phone i do it all the time and i have no problem doing it.
