Teen driving without a permit....?
|
Ok I am 16 and I am planning on taking drivers training this summer. Well before I start drivers training my dad wants to teach me a bit and have me get some real road experience before I start drivers training. So would my dad be able to take me around on some roads by my house, without getting in trouble?? I mean what if we get pulled over, would we be in trouble for me driving without a permit?? Thanks!! Additional Details Like I mean back roads, not like busy highway roads haha

Yes. Driving on a public street or road without a license or permit is a violation. You would be cited for no permit and your father could be cited for allowing you to drive. Practice parking, turning and backing skills in an empty parking lot instead. That's what I did with my kids before they got their permits. |

The point of that law is to assure that NO ONE is behind the wheel on ANY public road unless they know the basic rules of the road. One has to pass a written test before they get their permit.
In a private parking lot is one thing, but on public road, no matter how far out of town it is, you are not supposed to be driving. Your dad should know better.
Here's what happens if you get caught. Your dad gets a ticket with a hefty fine. YOU will not be allowed to get your permit until you are at least eighteen years old.
As far as being rude, it isn't being rude to get answers you don't want to hear. You asked what the consequences are and you got your answers. |

If stopped by the police for some reason- you could be issued a citation for being an unlicensed driver & your dad issued a citation for allowing an unlicensed person to drive. Unless you do something that totally places another in danger, & as long as you are NOT on any public roads, the police will not take such a hard no tolerance stance on this.
You also need to watch driving on private property. Even if it is considered "private property", if the public has access to the property, (WalMart parking lot for example) the police still usually have jurisdiction.
Most police officers will not bother you if you are practicing in an empty parking lot. Just avoid driving on any public roads until you are legal |

Yes, just because your dad is in the vehicle with you, you could still get into trouble.
It all depends on how the police officer wants to handle it. Most officers would give a warning and make your dad drive.
But you could get pulled over by Barney Fife. You and your dad could be ticketed. Your ticket could delay you from getting your learner's permit until you are 18.
What I mean by Barney Fife is you could get a police officer that over reacts to the situation. |

If you drive on ANY Public property; back roads, parking lots, anything except like your own property then you ARE breaking the law and you ARE driving without a license. If he wants to teach you then he better teach you in your yard, or if you have other family who have land you can use then go there. YOU can't drive there though. |

if your on private property then you cant get in trouble. and as long as you dont do anything stupid there not gona pull you over. but you should just go get your permit its not hard and then you have nothing to worry about |

You should have a permit to drive around with your dad. You won't need a permit to drive in a driver training course though.
You might be able to get away with it on back roads and in parking lots. Hopefully a cop won't ask to see your permit. If you see a cop in the parking lot, your dad should drive in case the cop follows you. |

yep. You need to take your written permit test to drive on a public road. He could take you on a private road if you have access to some. |
