Teens, adults, should we raise the driving age to 18?

Teens, adults, should we raise the driving age to 18?

I'm tired of hearing about 16-year-olds dying in car wrecks because they were driving stupidly, or were otherwise outdriving their experience or maturity level.
Rather than the current practice of getting their temps at 15 and full license at 16, I think kids should have to keep those temps until they're 18, THEN test for their full license. It'd give them more time to build on-the-road experience.

Who agrees with me?
Who has a better idea for reducing accidents among new drivers?
(And sorry, teens, but I don't want to hear about how this will inconvenience your life. You'll adapt. Teens always have. You probably have IM and a cell phone; you can certainly keep in touch with your friends. So bring something else to the debate.)

This is a subject that has bothered me for decades. Even when I was a teenager myself, I thought that 16-year-olds should not have licenses! My parents made me wait 'til I was 18, which at the time was upsetting because everyone else was driving. However, I could see the recklessness and immaturity among my friends at the time. Even the "smartest" kids in the class were poor drivers, taking risks and seemingly not realizing that vehicles can kill. I do not believe now-- and never did-- that 16-year-olds should be driving, and more so now with more cars on the roads. Kids should have to turn 18 before driving. Forget about kids being inconvenienced by this. It's the PARENTS who will whine the most about it. Parents of today are too lazy to transport their kids around, or at the least they are too lax in discipline and limits to say no to anything their kids want and need transportation for: activities, jobs, events, etc. I don't think we'll ever see the driving age be augmented for this reason. The parents don't want the inconvenience.

I totally agree with you.It seems that our young people are given certain rights when they are not mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with those rights.

There are lots of responsible good 16 yr old drivers, the only thing that changing the age would do is hear about 18 yr old drivers dying. as a parent i limited my kids passengers to only 1 and no talking on cell phone when driving.

you are the parent set the rules, and make the consequences stick if they are caught.

I absolutely agree. I didn't start driving until I was 18. I look at my 15 year old niece and think she is way too young to start driving next year.

ImOuThEreUdigg!!
I think its a good idea.

In Pa you can get a permit at 16 but you have to be 18 to have your licence!

I think it should be 18 for the permit too!

Here in germany you have to be 18 and pay 1500 euros you have to earn the money and show responsability by going to drivers school!!

I agree and disagree It would probably reduce curfew and speeding tickets and insurance bills would be a lot lower. It also could also lead to more cars being stolen or parents cars being driven without permission or ou teenage daughters dating the older guys because they have driver licenses.

When a person is mature enough they should be able to drive no matter what age they are!!!

I agree that it should be raised to 18, with the sole exception of allowing teenagers to drive to school and work at 16.

Teenagers simply are not ready to handle the responsibility. It is not the driving part that bothers me but the immaturity of understanding how easy it is to kill or be killed driving a car improperly. I was fortunate, but in Mississippi they allow some teenagers to actually drive at 15. I found this out when one of them, blaring his radio, drinking and chatting with his friends rear ended my car while I was at a dead stop. Years later I still have chronic back pain and probably will for the rest of my life. I'm just lucky that I am still alive.

YES!! I have one who is nearing the dreaded age.
Teens are involved and killed in way too many accidents.
I feel 18 is plenty generous. I started driving when I was 17, and my parents were horribly overprotective- no driving in the snow, rain, and it took months before I was allowed to drive at night! I lived though.

ithink we should raisee tha age becus more teens die and thats a hard time for their parents !!!!! so if yhuu all dont want tah the age to raise then STOP GETTING INTO ACCIDENTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YHUU ALL IMMATURE TEENS !!!

It is the parents job to decide wether or not their kids are mature enough to drive. If you know your kids are going to a party and normally come back from those parties drunk and hungover don't give them the keys to go in the first place. Some teenagers have jobs and afterschool activities and have parents who work late so they need to be able to drive. Raising the driving age is wrong when the real problem is just bad parenting.

You people are ridiculous if you think the driving age should be raised to 18! Parents should know if you their child is responsible enough to drive at 16. Just because a 16 year old get their license doesn't mean they have to be allowed to take the car any where they want. People can't tell their kids no anymore. Isn't it better for them to get their license at 16 and monitor them, rather them get it at 18 and have no control over them. All this will do is give us a bunch of 18 year olds that have to go places (work, school, etc.) and be inexperienced drivers.
