There are several still in effect plus a load of common law.

You are probably thinking of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 though I believe parts of the Offices Shops & Railway Premises Act and the Factories Act remain in force ... and probably a couple to do with mines and quarries.

It is alomost impossible NOT to find anything about it on-line if you type 'health & safety' into a search engine. Try this link if you want to know more:

The Health and Safety at Work Act.

First came out 1974 but there have been additions/amendments since.

The Law is called the "Health and Safety at Work Act 1974".

This has been changed and updated many times since it was first passed. It is supplemented by a lot of other legislation, most of which has come as Directives from the European Commission.

Some of the other answers are confused. The Health and Safety Executive are the body tasked with enforcing the law, they are not the law itself (which is what you asked).

Have a look at the HSE website below.

There are lots of safety laws. For safety in the workplace in the USA it is the Occupational Safety and Health Act, generally referred to as OSHA (pronounced "oh-shah". You can find lots of occupational safety information at its website, www.osha.gov.
