The new car seat laws?

The new car seat laws?

I am a little confused, if my child is over 4ft 5" tall, but only ten years old, does he still need a car booster seat?

Please only give me serious answers to this question, haven't got the time or patience to spend on time wasters

Its hee haw to do with age, if the kid is over 135cm it can sit in either passegner or rear seats without the requirement of a child safety restraint, so the age is irrelevant now.

see link below for all you need

depends on the state

no they don't, once they reach 4ft 5 they meet the height requirements for fitted seat belts..

RM
The EU directive is now 1.5 metres tall - that's more like 4' 10".
Check out which law applies to you... ie whether UK or Ireland.

Mrs Chicagosgirl!!
legally no, but i would still out them in one xx

it's a guide line for the height so if over the height limit he doesn't need one

No way! Age doesn't matter but height does!

Have a nice day!

It would help to know what state your in...but as a general rule of thumb they say once they hit 4'9", over the age of 8, weight more then 80 lbs they don't need it.
Best way to find out is contact your local police department.

No the age is just a guide - its the height that matters in law.

My boy is almost five foot, but only 9. He doesn't need one, but i still sit him on his old booster seat anyway.

My daughter is over the 135cm limit and is nine yrs old and as i take it, she doesn't have to use a booster. Don't worry about it too much the police are supposed to be lenient during the first few weeks i believe, and anyway how many times would you get pulled over for a check unless its obvious your kids are really unsafe by climbing all over the place, i've only ever been stopped once or twice in 17 yrs, the police are lazy and like there speed cameras too much.

Depends on where you live, each State has different laws concerning child seat laws. Here is a link with some info
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/menuitem.9f8c7d6359e0e9bbbf30811060008a0c/
. Just call your local Police station and ask to talk with someone that has this info,

the new law is out ragous but parents if there conserned enough with there childs safety would do that anyway.

I've found this table on the govenments roadsafety website. It says that after the child is over 1.35m (4ft 5") then the seat belt is enough.

http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/campaigns/childcarseats/childcarseats.htm#01

Check it out...

Hope this helps

Umm don't think so that is why they have changed it to height instead of age because you could have a 10yr old who is tall enuff to travel without and a 12yr old who isn't, you could always try asking at somewhere like mother care their sales people should be up on the rules and regs.

States vary on the requirements -- but the CDC has recommendations not just with height but with weight as well

"Children should start using a booster seat when they grow out of their convertible child safety seats -- when their ears are level with the top of the back of the safety seat and their shoulders are above the top strap slots, or when they reach the upper weight limit for the seat. Children should use a booster seat until the lap/shoulder belts in the car fit properly -- when they are at least 58 inches tall, have a sitting height of 29 inches and weigh 80 pounds (with clothing on).3 To ride comfortably and safely, children must be able to bend their knees over the edge of the seat while sitting with their backs firmly against the seat back. In most cases, this means that children 10 years old and younger should be using a booster seat."

Remember the reasons why these recommendations have been made is for child safety -- in crashes when children were under these weight and height requirements injuries such as evisceration or the opposite, being thrown from the seatbelt both happened....
