Won't hurt the car, but be sure it is in neutral when you crank an automatic.
Biggest danger is the loss of power steering and brakes right at a time when they may be needed, causing an accident. You admit not paying attention, so you know what needs to be corrected. |

Dangerous risk. The steering wheel will automatically lock in position and the car will still drift off and continue to move and you will not have any warning or easy way to stop.
However, the brakes will always apply pressure, and the emergency brake will help as well. |

that is bad. now we have a situation. now that you have the car in drive when its off, you need to be careful. the problem is, now when you turn your car on, your car might shoot forward because once you start the car, the engine will be in drive, and it will move the car forward.
what you should do is.......
before you turn your car on, make sure the parking brake is on. when you start the car, the front or rear wheels might start to try and spin against the brake, causing a screeching sound because the tires are running against the ground.
make sure that the parking brake is on before you start the car, and when you start the car, as soon as the engine finishes starting, press your foot on the brake pedal and keep it there until you shift the car into park, or neutral. |

Not really.
The car won't move in drive if it's an auto transmission.
Same for a manual trans as well if left in gear.
The gears will not turn either way.
Leaving both in neutral without a parking brake engaged is a different story. |

no, you just can't get the key out of the ignition, usually anyways.
If you pull too hard to get the key out you can...
1.) damage your car
2.) have it roll away, as it is still in drive.
3.) Kill someone. |
