Thought on how can we stop road accidents?

Here are a few ways of how we can lower road accidents.

*Paying attention. Many drivers are involved in accidents because of someone else's negligence. Many drivers on the road are oblivious to their surroundings because they are not giving the road 100% of their attention.

*Banning cellphones. If we get rid of these distractions, then many of the accidents could be avoided. Cellphones are hazards if used while driving because they cut down on your response time. If you are focused on your conversation rather than your surroundings then you will not see things going on around you.

*Intervention. Providing better in learning experiences and enforcing the rules of the road is key. Especially with teen drivers, it causes them to be heavily involved in learning the rules of the road. The problem today is that many drivers get their licenses, yet they do not use what they have learned.

*Law enforcement. This is important. Many accidents happen due to speeding and ignoring road laws. If law enforcers are on the road more frequently, then speeders will be discouraged or caught. The police officers job is to maintain peace on the roadways and cut down on accidents.

*Tougher laws against traffic violations. If laws are stiffened against those that violate laws, then drivers will be more apt to drive correctly and safely. Increasing fines, and a better likelihood of licenses being suspended would deter more drivers from driving in ways that cause more accidents.

Ban cell phone and texting use while driving. Increase the driving age and require more classes and experience to get the full license. Enforce speed limits. Take repeat DUI drivers off the road permanently. Require a yearly driving test for persons over 70.

the only way to STOP road accidents is to remove human error... to do that humans can't drive.

You Can't. As long as people have freedom you will never stop people making mistakes and as long as there are car thief criminals who do not obey the rules and who usually crash when driving excessively fast then the objective is pure fantasy. What you can aim for is a reduction in accidents due to poor judgement, poor maintenance of vehicles, poor maintenance of roads, lack of police on the road and sheer pigheadedness of a lot of people. In the UK we are not at the top for safety but we are nowhere near the middle let alone the bottom of the table for bad driving.

Make the age of driving higher.

Introduce a minimum number of hours lessons before sitting test.

Make lessons teach proper car control and more focus on anticipation as well a accident simulation.

Introduce a tougher test including reaction tests and skid control.

Introduce a motorcycle awareness assessment/test for car drivers before getting full licence. (drivers always say they never saw the motorbike coming !! )

Introduce a vehicle banding system after passing test, e.g 1st year upto 1.4L 2nd year upto 1.8L etc(as well as BHP banding)

Introduce a cheap assessment every 5 years and every year for over 65's

Zero tolerance on DUI, repeat offenders banned.

3 strike system on own fault accidents in 1 year = test re-sit

Limit top end speeds on cars, why have a car that can do 150mph if the highest road limit is 70mph

Introduce a camera system that automatically checks insurance database for insurance dodgers.

These may seem a harsh but from my experience as car driver and motorcycle rider, I think some people need it. Especially when you are sat at a red traffic light and have your car written off because the person behind wasn't paying attention. I think people get comfortable in the box of metal protection and forget they are actually able to kill or injure people.

Use your blinkers - BEFORE hitting the brakes.

Don't follow to close - you won't get there any quicker riding my bumper.

Go with the flow - not speed/swerve through it.

Look out for the other guy, give them space.

Design features can reduce both crash risk and crash severity.

Use of daytime running lights for motorized vehicles and reflectors for bicycles improves visibility.

Smart features can discourage speeding, remind drivers to use seat-belts, improve vehicle stability and prevent a drunk driver from turning on a car.

Airbags, collapsible steering columns and rollover protection can reduce the severity of injuries sustained in a crash.

Unfortunately we still need to educate the public and we need to drive by the rules of the road........
