Tips for driving in the rain on freeways?

I've never driven on the freeway in the rain before, and I have to tomorrow. I'm visiting a friend in North Hollywood, past Los Angeles. It's 50 miles to get there, and I only need one freeway, the 5 North. Do you have any good tips on how to make sure it's a safe and smooth trip in the rain? I don't normally drive that much faster than speed limit. Thanks.

Just drive slow (slower than the speed limit if you feel unsafe), and keep your eyes open for other drivers. Many people drive too fast to allow for a safe stopping distance, and especially when the road is wet, this is very dangerous. Don't drive faster than you feel safe going, even if people are flying past you. And keep in mind that when a road gets wet, it becomes very slick due to the oil and such on the road (this is especially true when it first starts raining).

Slow down to speed limit, apply brakes gently when possible, it's usually some other clown being stupid that causes the accident ,then drives away uninvolved and watch for low spots filled with water. Generally it's OK. |

Don’t drive too fast - you don’t have to drive the posted speed limit, less is ok.
Try to avoid sudden steering, braking or accelerating actions.
Make sure you are looking ahead.
Give yourself time to react.
Read the road conditions.
Listen to your local radio station(s) to get latest road conditions.
Use your wipers and your lights. |
