Tips to stay sane while driving?

The best way to pass the time in a calm manner is by listening to one of many morning shows.

If laughing to yourself doesn't do it for you, then a book on tape (or CD) can be a great distraction when the idiot who has been tail-gating you for the past 5 miles changes lanes then cuts you off to gain a whole car length.

If you're still feeling edgy with your current book, try a murder story where at least you can daydream that the person being murdered is the idiot in the car in front or back of you.

Listening to country music is a good choice as well for staying calm in traffic.

Listen to your favorite music really loudly, and take a few deep breaths whenever someone pisses you off. If you get angry and want to say something horrible, just say it as calmly as possible instead of getting loud and yelling at the person who got you angry.

I also try to concentrate on the rules of the road when I start getting mean and aggressive, and try to follow them as much as possible. I don't have time to really focus on the other people and how stupid they might be around me because I am too busy making sure I am doing the right thing (using my blinker, not following too close, not going slow in the fast lane, etc). If someone still seems to get under your skin, calmly let them know how much you hope they get a ticket. They usually do, and it usually makes me perk right up! Good luck out there!

In some states it is a felony to have road rage.So I always try to remind myself of the trouble that one could get into. So extra time on the road is better than time behind bars.

I had a class not too long ago to get rid of a speeding ticket. When it is broken down to how fast you are going and how much time you are acutually saving, the difference isnt worth it. I get the same way sometimes, but I just have to remember to take it easy.

Slow down and enjoy the ride. Its how I relax sometimes.

invest in a better car audio system. I drive an hour everyday to work/school and in rush it has taken me anywhere from 1.5-3 hours. Get some music that you love and start cranking it. It definitely helps. Also dress your car up from the inside. I know it sounds stupid, but it helps too. Get seat cover and what not, it will make your car feel more like home.

Break your trip in 2. Get off the road for 5 minutes, stretch, walk around for a minute. Have a snack, maybe even say a little prayer of thanks for all you have. Take a deep breath and continue your trip.

Stay calm. start early. On Fridays' avoid using the car. Take public transport, whichever is available. Increase it to at least 2/3 days in a week. It will sooth your nerve. Good luck.

audiobooks/comedy.
in-car fridge (you can buy them at target, even)

Ohh!
I know, while driving, you can just listen to soothing music on the radio or on a CD, and think smooth while concentrating on the road.
If there is anybody that's really irritating you while on the road or any kind of vehicle, just think smooth! Ignore them and the traffic, and just drive.
Clear your mind of aggressiveness, that's all.
Even though I drove one time (just a test drive), you can still heed my advise.
Again, just say smooottthhhh. :)

Think about this for just this one min while you read. I reside in the NYC area myself, is it worth your life if you wind up in a really bad crash as a result of your acquired driving habits ? I experience the same things as you if not worse. Only "you" can maintain your own sanity. Try this, I listen to music by ok, Kitaro while driving, it levels my way of thinking, I always remain in the right lane when I can, passing only when its safe to do so. Why is it that the way some aggressive drivers drive others follow the same aggressive behavior at some point, Monkey see monkey do ??? now come on, is that responsible ?
