false. many people use them for family. And they are coming uo with Hybrids and there are new regulations they have to meet, so it isnt like they are the only cause of all YOUR problems.

i'd rather have a 4x4 in the winter than a standard 2 wheel drive. 4x4's are easier to get moving in the snow, but that dont mean it'll get ya stopped quicker. dont like suv's....dont buy em. peeps in america have the freedom of choice. their money.

SUV's can run on diesel fuel which is more efficient. in fact all the cars in Europe are diesel.

True but for a different reason : SUV's are death machines and should be banned for that reason alone.
I drive the three dimensional roads of the American West with a lot of curves ,climbs and crosswinds and I cannot tell you many SUV's I've seen upside-down. I can almost predict with a great degree of certainty, that if I see a vehicle upside-down in a ditch it's an SUV.
Because of it's great mass and it's high center of gravity even a routine high speed obstacle avoidance maneuver can roll an SUV. Add to that decreasing radius exits that SUV drivers come into with too much velocity and another death is in the offing.
As far as the people carrying capacity, one of my cars is a '96 Buick Roadmaster station wagon. The Buick will haul five people plus a lot of cargo in comfort and safety
It is a great long distance high speed automobile and at higway speeds it will get 25 mpg. Which is better than an SUV's.
I know for a fact that I can shred a left front tire at 80 mph and stay on the road and remain upright. I also that as good a driver as I am ,I would have great deal of difficulty keeping an SUV upright in a similar situation.The physics of the vehicle simply won't allow it.
I really wish that Ralph Nader would come out of retirement and write Unsafe at Any Speed 2. and hopefully kill SUV"s
The danger of the Corvair was minuscule compared to the danger of SUV's.
Btw before anybody gets on my case about driving at 80 mph, the posted speed limit on AZ rural interstates is 75 mph.

I do not believe that the vehicle you drive changes your level of "importance". The SUV's are roomy, comfortable, Safe. I believe people buy SUV's more for the feeling of safety than concern about fuel economy. I would trade safety over fuel economy in regrades to my family also.. And people should be allowed to buy the vehicle they want. Not only to people buy them but people make them.

True, SUVs don't make you important. No vehicle of any kind can make you anything more than you are. If you are piece of crap as a human being a blingin' SUV or chromed out Mercedes will not change this.

Should they be banned? Well, no. That's not the American way. However the government needs to step up to the plate and regulate these things more. A family of 4 does not need a Ford SUV the size of an aircraft carrier. People in EVERY OTHER COUNTRY in the world somehow manage to have families too and get them and their stuff where they need to go without driving school bus sized SUV's that get 10 mpg. But we NEED them?

It's socially irresponsible to own one of these things for most people's purposes. If you live on a mountaintop and need to tow your boat and carry your family of 6 up there, then by all means go for it. But soccer moms don't need a freaking battleship to take the kids to school.

Oh, but you want to be safe? Then buy a Volvo wagon or something else with a high safety rating. Your right to be safe does not allow you to make EVERYONE ELSE LESS SAFE because you drive an ill handling, overweight vehicle you cannot control while you talk on your cell phone and drink your mocha frappachino.

Many people are clearly selfish and self-absorbed, therefore it falls on the government to regulate the size, safety and fuel economy of the vehicles the majority of the people drive to some degree. If we let people do whatever they want what would the world be like? We need rules in society for those of us who aren't quite as thoughtful and broad-minded about the impact our actions have on the rest of humanity and the planet.

So, no, don't ban SUV's but make the ginormous ones heavily taxed and require special licenses and training to drive them. Limit the Ford Excursions and giant truck like this to construction crews on the Alaska pipeline and people like that who actually need them. Not mommy dropping the kids off at ballet practice.

False - people have a choice when they buy their vehicles. It is a matter of choice and needs of a driver. These vehicles use more fuel, which that is how these vehicles are design in the first place.

While I agree with you about them not making the driver important, and that they are a waste of our natural resources & dependence on foreign oil, you lost me with the word "banned". I don't want the government running my life any more than they already do. We have had books in the schools here banned because someone didn't agree with them. I'd like to ban censorship!

False - they shouldn't be banned because large families need them. Where are you going to put all those booster & other car seats when you have 3 or more kids? I just hate it when 1 person drives them to work & has no reason to need such a smog monster.

No, some people need them, but they should be converted to vegetable diesel engines as that would make a lot more sense, environmentally speaking.
