Under 30mph, is 34 mph unforgivable?

No it is not.
Speedometers can overread by 10pct so an indicated 30 could be about 27mph. An indicated 34 could be about 30-31.
The guidelines for convicting on a speeding offence is 10% +2mph so you would not normally get done until 35mph.

Like everything with speeding it is not the speed itself it is whether it is appropriate or not.
34mph outside a primary school at kicking out time is probably too fast but the same speed at 2am is not.

Yes it is... the speed limit displayed is meant to be the maximum safe speed for that area... so even if your doing 30 spot on, you're pushing the boundaries.... I guess we all do it but at the end of the day, rules are rules

chippie_minton
You get 10% for discrepancies, over that, tough.

Depends on the policeman on the day, if you were caught.

You are still speeding at this speed.

In a 30 zone, a speed camera will get you at 32mph. So yes, if you don't want to get caught, don't do 34, stay under 32.

dadseimaj
You really should stay below 30 . Remember it's a limit not a target

My driving instructor has told me previously that local councils vary on their tollerance to speeding. For example in Cheshire the local police allow for 10% (So 33 mph would be ok). However, I hear in Wales they only allow for 2mp, regardless of what the speed limit is?!

Hope this helps

A LIMIT is exactly that, a LIMIT!

By the way - the 10% mentioned by other answerers is only to allow for the fact that your speedometer must read correctly +/- 10%.

If your speedometer is under-reading and you travel at an indicated 33mph (thinking you are safe ) you are in reality travelling at 33 + 10% = 36.3mph.
As none of us know whether our speedometers are under reading, the only safe speed to do is the indicated speed on your speedo! The cameras are set to allow for the 10% tolerance, which is allowed by law.

was your speedometer saying 34 or speed camera / radar gun,i am Shure myth busters got a bird of pray to set a camera off. these things are not full proof, as your question asks, "under 30, is 34 unforgivable" is down to the situation, look at the police, fire Brigade, ambulance. if your offspring or parents etc have problems and your taking them to hospital, you could be accused off going to slow. all down to road conditions, driving ability and the reason or lack of reason

I have a satnav and the speed on the satnav is always at least 2mph lower than my speedo .the satnav is more accurate .therefore 34 mph could equate to 30/31 mph

k
YES it is. EVERY mph over the speed limit INCREASES the risk of the person you hit DYING.

As the speedomoter isn't an exact science. As a rule of thumb, you add 10% and then 2mph - so 30mph - 35mph. You could contest this if needed.

Technically the answer is no.

Morally the answer is still no.

However, much like most of the United Kingdom, we all speed and use t as a guide limit. knowing full well the consequences of what happerns when we met PC plod with his magic gun

yes it is , unless you have had you speedo calibrated recently it could be out as much as 5 mph, that goes for a police speedo or camera or radar gun, they must by law have there equipment calibrated weekly i think.

no way its ridiculous how picky the law now is.
