WHAT IF ..............................… the speed limit was 85 MPH?
People would use that as an excuse to drive at 105 mph, and there would definitely be an increase in fatal accidents. Plus, I don't think the roads in this country are really made for such speeds. Now the German autobahn on ther other hand...
Would you be comfortable driving at that speed for extend
ed periods IN YOUR PRESENT CAR?
No, I wouldn't. I have a well-kept 1993 Taurus and the fastest I would drive continuously is around 75 mph. Plus, driving that fast burns more fuel than driving in the 55-70 mph range. Some cars also become unstable at around 85 mph, imagine if everyone who had a car like that was invited to go balls to the wall.
How would one prepare themself for that speed?
Driving lessons, experience, better car, sheer will power
How would one prepare their car?
Newer, more properly inflated tires, oil/air filter changes, new brakes, lowered chassis, engine mods (possibly), wheel alignment, afterburners |

WHAT IF ................................. the speed limit was 85 MPH?
There would be a lot more deaths on the highway - both of drivers, and people in other cars, as well as innocents who are not even on the road.
I would be fine driving this speed in the interstate. but I worry about the morons I see who don't even know what a red light means, or who can't seem to stay in their lane.
How would one prepare themself for that speed?
By not being a moron. Knowing and obeying all the laws.
How would one prepare their car?
Maintain your car correctly - fluid, etc. But mostly - tires. You need good, new tires. |

Well the obvious result of a speed limit being 85 would be an increase in accidents. Generally the higher the speed limit the more tendency one has to push the envelope as it relates to speed.
Now to answer your questions, I myself would not be so comfortable driving at the speed. I think driving at anything that is 85 or above is dangerous. One can easily lose control the faster one drives.
In preparing yourself for that speed, I believe it would take a while. Seeing as how the highest speed limit is essentially 70 mph, I think it wouldn't be so easy to adjust to a great speed of 85 or above. One would have to get used to the feeling of going so fast without causing an accident.
I don't think you can prepare your car for such a speed. If one is driving at that speed for a lengthy period of time, you will eventually cause damage to your car. Also note, the faster one driver the more gas you consume. This is true for all vehicles. Gas consumption is something you cannot avoid especially when driving that fast. |

well, we have got 80 miles per hour...and everybody complains, I always drive at 100, on free highways....
In germany they do have no limits on their highways, I experienced a nice ride to Hamburg (around 500 miles away form state border) driving at 120 miles per hour....you can't imagine how you feel overtaking patrol's cars at that speed on highway...and they don't even look at you!!!
You're right, I didn't answer correct. My car is a Mercedes clk kompressor cabrio, it was fine up to 130 miles per hour, checked and tested with no vibrations and issues for about 200 miles trip at night. It is absolutely fine at 85 mph |

I am reasonably comfortable driving at those speeds. Fortunately I live in a part of the country (Canada) where I can indulge myself when the mood strikes. There is seldom any traffic on even our main highway (Trans Canada Hwy #1) and there is a very limited Police presence. It helps that this highway runs straight for hundreds of miles and has very few elevation changes.
When I go out for a 'toot' I just lay off the caffeine. The drive is enough of a rush. And I wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
As for my cars - number one is a 2006 Malibu Maxx 3.5 litre; I do have a set of speed rated performance tires mounted on it and I have upgraded the brake pads. I maintain all my own vehicles and am confidant that at least two of them are up to the task. The other car is a late 50s English Jaguar that I haven't actually had a chance to drive yet. |

I've driven 85 on some highways in my present car but it can't handle it for a long time and it can't always do it when there are a lot of people/ weight in the car. So I wouldn't feel comfortable for extended periods of time, no.
How to prepare myself? I don't know, you just drive that speed, it's not that complicated. I'm fine driving fast on freeways and country roads (which I drive on a lot) where there are not a lot of cars/people/animals. I wouldn't drive that fast where there would be other traffic (whether cars or pedestrians).
How would I prepare my car? Get a new one... I'm a college student. My car is great but not as young as it could be. : p. Get new tires, brakes, oil change. New engine or body if you need it. |

on oregon's I-5 when going through keizer/salem area our speed limit is 65 MPH. Personally I drive at 70 MPH usually. and it's almost always raining in our state so there is on slipping. Majority of people on our freeway are at the same pace, i believe (i'm on I-5 every night to go to work) |

ive only got a 1.2 corsa but id try, i wouldnt moan that the limit was to high.
and my insurance is high enough already, if that where the speed limit no young people would be able to afford to drive.
a good point is that car companys would start to make cars faster as standard, we'd end up with M5's for 5series money !!! |

Driver education will make the roads a lot safer than speed limits ever could.
Good drivers can drive fast safely.
People who can't handle a car properly are dangerous even at slow speeds. |
