D) Scan as much of the roadway as you can possibly see. About 2/3 of the time you should be scanning the roadway from the front of your car to a distance of 10 seconds travel distance, the remainder of the time should be divided into looking as far as you can see in front of you, scanning to both sides, checking the rear view mirrors and checking the speedometer and other gauges.
Only focus on the right edge of your lane when your vision is affected by the direct glare of oncoming headlights at night. |

I drive looking as far ahead as is practical. I think this tends to be about a quarter of a mile. By looking at the traffic a good distance in front of me, I can actually see and be aware of pretty much everything between that distance and the front of my car.
Also, the closer one focuses one'e attention, the "narrower" his field of vision seems. But, by looking at the distant traffic, in all the lanes in front of me, plus the oncoming lanes and the cross traffic intersections and driveways, my awareness of possible hazards is expanded. My head is "on a swivel" moving from one side of the road to another, to my mirrors, to traffic in front, to my dashboard, to traffic in oncoming lanes, to my other mirrors, to cross traffic, to the dash, to traffic lights two or three intersections ahead, to my mirrors, to the cars ahead, etc.
The result is that very little escapes my attention. I get to see potential road hazards long before they become dangerous situations. I don't wait to react. I become proactive, anticipating light changes, lane chages, pedestrians and so on.

Look ahead 15 seconds. The faster you go, the farther you have to look. Also look at everything up to that point ie: intersection scans, parked cars and the list can go on forever.
It takes 3 things to be a good driver: 1. Knowledge 2. Skills 3. Attitude and one can write forever what to look for and it takes good common sense along with the 3 things I just listed to be a good driver. |
