I just went driving for the first time and was in 40 MPH zone. I was following the speed limit, but the car behind me was probably 10 feet away from my bumper. As a first time driver it made me kinda nervous. I know the whole 2 second rule, but about how many feet away should that driver have been?

Maybe even less than 10 feet actually..

at 40 mph, you're traveling a little less than 59 feet per second. The two second rule says then, that they should have been well over 100 feet behind you - so yes, they were tailgating, big time. |

What I do is, without using the brake (don't want to cause a panic), gradually decelerate to a speed you're comfortable with given the space between your vehicles. If it's a long stretch of road and he stays behind ya a long time, speed up a little ever once in awhile, to see if they've caught on.
Don't hit the brakes if you're unarmed. |

the 2 second rule is also stated as 1 car length per 10 mph. a typical car length is about 15 feet, so he should have been at least 60 feet back. |

Your little tailgater should appear to be about one half to 3/4 of an inch tall in your rear view mirror. This comes out to about an 80 foot separation distance between you and he - at least. It appears that he was using the NASCAR tactic of getting around someone in front - intimidation and drafting. |

i asked my driver's ed teacher this question. Once their back wheels are covered from your view, you are tailgating.
In regards to safe driving, you should follow the "2 second rule" on local streets and a "5 second rule" on highways. |

next time somebody is following too close slightly tap your brake peddle just enough to activate your brake lights,if they dont get the hint then let em eat your azz ....hit your brakes hard real quick and let off of them and get back on the gas they will s**t their pants, just dont do it around any police |

Remain Calm! Losing your cool means losing control, and losing control of your vehicle is the last thing you want to do. Deep breaths are a big help. Focus on your situation, and not on the radio or passengers or cell phones, (which you might want to avoid using while driving, especially in a tense situation).
