Find answers to your legal question.

We've had an ice storm over night causing "black ice" WHAT IS BLACK ICE on the road?

What optical illusions does it cause toward the occurrence and possible increase of accidents? And by WHAT MEANS are these optical illusions created?
Until today I had not heard of "black ice" - although during the early hours of today there did occur an accident up our road claimed to be an example of black ice causing great confusion.

Could, would anyone tell in detail what this phenomenon is, and by what means it is so indiscernible, YET so especially dangerously treacherous???

Thank you!
Additional Details
Thank you for the blue links of information. And Yes, I know I could have Googled this question, but after this early morning's accident only up the road, because of it, I was also wondering who may have experienced it themselves. And what had happened.
The only reason the event this morning perhaps was not more injurious, is that one of the cars after colliding with the other, slipped over to the side and got stopped into a snow bank. Also, the road has little traffic! Thank you all!

Black ice is dangerous because you don't see it or even know it's there until you drive over it, what makes it so bad is that when people realize they hit the ice, they tend to over correct their steering by turning the wheel this way or that way and when you hit the dry pavement with your wheels turned a little it will throw you out of aline with the lane you was driving in causing you to swerve and then you may over correct again causing you to really go out of control, If you think you hit some black ice just let off the gas and keep you car straight, Don't turn your wheel even if you feel the car going to the side for a second, just keep it straight so that you can hit the dry road as straight as you can, and if possible give yourself extra time and room. and slow down and don't drive with the cruise control on when the roads are not perfect.

Black ice is nothing special, it is just ice that is so clear it looks the same colour as the road. (black) So alot of people aren't as careful when they stop because they think there is no ice and they should have find traction

kenbgray
Its ice that you can't see. Very dangerous.

black ice is ice that you can't see because it is so clear that you just see right through to the asphalt...so it can be tricky if you are trying to avoid ice

black ice is "ice" on the road that you can't see, and you don't know it's there until you're on it

Most Canadians are no stranger to black ice.It is so dangerous because it is almost invisible on the road until you are almost on top of it.Even when the weatherman forecasts the possibility of black ice drivers continue to drive too fast and too close for road and weather conditions which makes for a perfect recipe for an accident. It only takes seconds for the commute to turn deadly. The simple solution is to slow down but many people overlook that .Take care.

It's because it freezes "clear" but is viewed as black because of the road color. It's especially "hazardous" because you can not see it. If it were regular ice on the road you can usually see it. here's more info:

Black ice is especially dangerous because it is so hard to see. When most water turns to ice, it has a white color too it. With black ice on the other hand, it is clear and almost impossible to see. (especially while driving).

when the water freezes on the road way it looks shinny like it just snowed or rained.but the road way may look wet its not its frozen, hence black ice.only way you can tell if the road is frozen or just wet is by the spray from your tires in your rear-view mirror or other vehicles on your side of the road that has spray coming from the there tires.and never ever, repeat, never use your brakes on black ice, this is how you crash and burn.if at any thing to do if on black ice and start to spin put trans in N,to take the power away from your drive wheels, and try and steer in direction of the spin.or if your vehicle has a standard trans push in the clutch pedal and steer in direction of the spin.to correct the problem.but never use the brake pedal, same as hydroplaning you never use the brakes.

See it this way. Black ice is ice that is hidden on a road. It is so hard to see it blends into the asphalt.

Learn one thing-when driving in cold weather always be careful and cautious. Driving high speeds is unwise as you want time to stop which speeding does not provide. Drive safely.

Black ice is clear and see through so it seems to the color of the road and it looks black because of it. The only reason it is more dangerous than regular ice is because usually you can't see it and so you don't know you are on ice, other than that it is the same as regular ice

Black ice.. you can see the hwy. and it looks clear and good only to find it has a thin layer of ice you can't see....but you will know when you slide off the road.

You know you could have gotten a much faster - instantaneous in fact - answer if you just Googled 'what is black ice'.

Black ice is ice on a road that, especially at night, looks like the road does, so drivers do not see the ice in time to stop or slow down before they drive onto the ice and skid out of control.

Jen
thin sheet of ice on roads and parking lots that is virtually invisible.

Dahlia
black ice is very dangerous on the road because it is so clear and drivers don't see it coming. It is also very slippery

Black Ice is the same as the regular ice that builds up on the roads except it is SUPER slippery. Thats why people are crashing so much. Its also way harder to scrape off the roads, to we just have to wait for it to melt.
Hope I helped!

ignant_slob
It is actually ice that is so clear that you can't tell that it is there.
