I work with youth and during my 8 years in this field there have been 6 fatalities and many more injuries from car crashes. In the majority of these cases the cars were equipped with all the latest safety features. Still there is only so much an airbag can do for you when you're going 100 mph. I personally think that there is too much emphasis placed on safety features and not nearly enough enough placed on defensive and advanced driving.
I mean the best case scenario is that your daughter has the skills to avoid freezing up and know how to react to dangerous driving situations. This will get her out of danger and keep her out of harms way rather than minimizing injuries due to a safety device.
Make sure that she has all the professional training that is available, maybe even an advanced driving course. That is probably the most valuable safety feature you can provide her. And personally I would feel more comfortable knowing that my loved ones are excellent drivers over knowing they are in a car with airbags and ABS braking. |

Most everything is included. Just dont get her a beetle or a smart car, get one with a lot of hood space. If she does have a head on crash, would you rather the hood was destroyed or the coc-pit? Also, get her either a Toyota or a Honda. I know which car my dad is getting me for my sweet sixteen (ALMOST HERE!!!!) 'tis an accord. Theyre good on mileage, safe and they look nice:) Dont go all out for her first car. Chances are, she wont have it for very long. (That didnt mean she would crash it, but dents and the fact that she just might want another car when shes older...) |

how about a seat belt that is used by her. you can have air bags etc. but the seat belt is the best bet. |

I think most everything that is needed now a days are already included as standard equipment; seat belts, air bags. |

FIRST AND FOREMOST MAKE SURE SHE HAS HAD THE PROPER TRAINING, THIS INCLUDES NIGHT DRIVING, DRIVING IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND THE ABILITY TO CHANGE A TIRE BY HER SELF ON A CAR. THEN, GET HER A CAR WITH ABS, AIR BAGS, AND A CAR THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH. |

Get something that has a reputation for being safe and long lasting- like a Honda or a Toyota. Some cars, like the Dodge Neon (especially the older ones) are tin buckets that won't withstand an accident that well. Another thing to factor in today's world is gas mileage! Don't get her a guzzler... Hondas are good for that also. I would recommend a Civic or Accord.
Another suggestion: I drive a 2002 Saturn SC2, and I LOVE it. It's a fun, cute car, while still being reliable and safe, and the gas mileage is pretty good. |
