Ahh.... actually there are quite a few cars with better crash ratings than Volvo.

(I like the New Beetle, but they don't do so hot on side impacts. But back in '04 they were the only car that passed the bumper test with $0 damage.)

any modern car is safe, Volvo's are built like tanks, try looking at marques like Honda, Nissan, GM, Ford etc, I'm assuming that you are American by the use of the word "mom" so i doubt you have Renaults all of which have Euro NCAP 5 star ratings (NCAP being the Industry standard for safety in Europe

All three of these cars are the same size as a MAXDA 3 or a FORD FOCUS. I say this because all these cars share the same basic structure underneath their bodywork.

VOLVO are legendary as being built tough...but compared to the NCAP ratings of today, even they rate only at a regular 2 or 3 depending on the model of Volvo.

Please do some online research and find what NCAP Rating they have been labelled. A rating of '5' is perfect. Good Luck

Volvo's are AMAZING with safety and such, but i definately don't suggest any compact cars or cars like Honda civic/ accord or any acura's / Mazda's Ford and Chevy/GMC all have very high deathr rates except the newer models. i know death rates dont mean much but the cars do crumble like tin cans. the best choices would be Volvo Toyota or Nissan thats if you getting an older vehicle as a first car. but if you are getting a newer model any car pretty much is ok for safety except most kia's suzuki's and isuzu's. i suggest finidng cars you like then searching online at IIHS.com or youtube for the crash tesand approve it by your mom.

I have recently been an accident in my 2006 volvo s60. the car was nearly totalled and neither of the drivers side doors were salvagable. The bill to fix it was horrid, but luckily we have very good insurance. if i would have been in any other car i would be in a coma. i literallt had no clue i was even in an accident. i didnt feel a single thing. i would highly recommend either an s60 or an s40. if you cant afford a volvo, then look into a Ford Fusion. it has all the same technology because volvo bought ford (or the other way around).
