What's the point of having a car alarm when they only go off when they're not supposed to?

Most people just ignore them or think of them as an irritation rather than a sign that a car is being broken into, so it seems to me that they're more of an expensive placebo than a theft deturrant.

Your right. The best theft deterrant to have is one that kills the electronics if someone tries to steal it . No one pays attention to a car alarm anymore |

they do help scare the thief away ,from a vehicle ,that's one of the purposes of them, still though you are right ,most people do ignore them or think of them as a problem ,rather than a solution,it will stop thieves in most cases, but unless someone actually looks to see whats going on the thief can get away with a lot of your personal stuff, sometimes the car its self.their still worth having though, the newer one do disable the ignition, and that will save the car from being stolen, good luck on it. |

I figured that out. There is no point in them anymore. |

You have a point.
However, I own a repair shop with my husband and we have installed many car alarms and what most people don't know is that there is a sensitive mode on certain models of car alarms. This mode can be adjusted so that even the slightest bump can set it off,or so, that it would take an actually attempt to break in to set it off. |

Well, they may go off when they aren't supposed to...and people may ignore them when they do go off...but believe me, a thief isn't going to stand there and take a chance on continuing with all that noise in his ears. It's like having a dog -- statistics show that thieves just don't bother with the homes that have a dog, since they can keep looking and find one that doesn't. |

Most likely because they got a cheap alarm. When I put an alarm on my truck, I paid the money and got one that has a little remote that shows me what part of the vehicle was impacted in order to make it sound in addition to Lojack. My alarm only goes off when it needs to. |

You know American Patriot, I've been wondering the exact same thing for the past ten or fifteen years. It's so common place to hear a car alarm go off that nobody even pays it any mind. At best, most people are just annoyed by the thing and I've actually observed people holding their ears and going well around the car...
It's simply amazing at how many people are that paranoid about their own safety.
For the past twenty years, I've left my house unlocked and the keys in my car. I live in rural Pennsylvania. My neighbors have their cars locked, homes locked, and they have all sorts of alarms. I frequently ask them what is their alarm for? Does it go off when a motorist throws some rubbish in their yard? That's about the only alarm I've ever needed in 40+ years I've lived here.
Crime where I live = trash being thrown in my yard. The hillbillies around here are so tame that they've long ago stopped shooting the street signs. |

in my personal experience i've found that alarms cause more problems than good. i've had so many customers stuck somewhere because their alarm system was malfunctioning and an experienced theif or mechanic can disable and bypass a car alarm in less than 5 min. the best thing to do is have a kill switch installed in a place that only you know. but the simple fact is if somebody wants your car bad enough they will steal it. |
