What are common myths about driving and using cell phones?

what are some common myths about driving and using cell phones? or texting! Additional Details umm i think you guys are missing the question. I am doing this for a report to discourage cellphone use while driving. I need serious answers too. For example that a hands-free cell device is less distracting and therefore safer than a handheld.

The myths in my opinion are that a few bad drivers on cell phones gives people the impressive that nobody can drive while talking on the cell phone. But that's not the case. Good drivers can drive while talking on a cell phone. Police, truckers, etc. have radios/CB which is the same thing as holding a cell phone.
I don't think anybody can text while driving safely. But talking to someone on a cell phone is no different than talking to a passenger in your car. And it's fact that there are a lot of distractions while driving that don't get mentioned that often and cell phones get a bad rap.
I don't think a hands free device is less distracting. What's distracting is the conversation weather it's on a hands free or handheld cell phone or talking to a passenger in the car.
What's more distracting is when the conversation gets stressful and people take their attention away from the road. If people can maintain attention to the road while talking on the cell phone, I don't have a problem with it. Some people can and some people can't. |

Here is a quick fact.
If I see a cell phone in the left hand of a driver, they WILL NOT use the turn signals. if cell phone is in right hand, they have the ability to use the turn signals. That doesn't mean they will use the turn signals. At least they have the ability to use them.
Observed a police officer using a cell phone in his left hand. "That police officer can't use the turn signal" went thru my mind. 5 SECONDS later, officer makes lane change without signaling his intentions. Should have contacted the chief of police and made a complaint. But, I would have been targeted by his fellow officers. Not worth the hassle. |

The myths are not your concern. The higher accident rate is.
What really bugs me is when a person has their phone up to their left ear as they merge onto the freeway. They don't look to see if they have a space to fit into and their hand partially blocks their blind spot. |

The myth is that it's perfectly ok and nothing will happen. |

I agree with Eric, it is not the phone that is unsafe, it is operator error. I can talk on the phone, drive, drink coffee, and just about anything else, without taking my eyes of the road and being aware of what the other drivers are doing. It is all about coordination and multitasking. I wouldn't want a 16 year old driving and talking on their phone because they don't have enough experience driving and teenagers tend to get emotional quicker and not be able to concentrate on driving. |
