What are other peoples views on this...... i'd like to know?

I saw a patrol car pick up a young woman *Undertake* another car ,not dangerously , it was just that the person in front was just going very slow and there was plenty of room.
I myself ,dont like care drivers *undertaking* me, but this young woman had yards of room.
A patrol car who was cruising at that moment picked her up and she got fined £ 35
She was a single mum.
i'm not saying she souldnt have been fined or warned ,
But £35 ,for Gods sake, a £5 would have been suffcient i think, to stop her doing it again.
Why couldnt he see she had 4 children to look after
Oh, i just realised, Im pointing out once again, that the Law is a becoming a business

If you cant afford the fine, dont break the law, especially with a police car in sight!!!!!!!

Im sorry, but if you break the law infront of the police you deserve everything you get. Its not like a big white, green and yellow car with lots of lights and the word "police" on every body panel is hard to miss. And even "unmarked" cars stick out like a sore thumb.

Being a single mom doesn't mean she can break laws and/or drive dangerously and not face the consequences.

Whilst undertaking is dangerous and illegal I do feel that the "pratt" that hogs the outside lane and prevents another driver from passing by their inconsiderate use of the road should also be taken to task
I ride a motorcycle and NEVER undertake because I want to remain safe and the driver on the outside has every right to pull in a lane and carve me up at best and knock me off at worst and I would be 100% in the wrong. So my point is why do the police do nothing to stop the outer lane being hogged by selfish drivers and just try to make the road a safe place for us all
I posted a Q on here with regard to the appalling driving standards in the UK and whilst some did say that it is worse in other European countries the overwhelming majority aggreed that there was much room for improvement
I feel that this driver you describe was fined probably correctly but the un-fairness is the cause of her "undertaking" was allowed to go on their way scot free. This I think is wrong and amounts to "driving with undue care and attention" and carries a far heavier penalty. He or she was clearly not giving due consideration for other road users
Well, I've said my bit and will now probably get well and truly slated

I think it's about time we made undertaking legal. I just don't see why it's dangerous. If the person in front won't move out of the middle lane, and you're in the left lane, how can there be an accident?

Sorry but at the end of the day undertaking is undertaking and it's against the law.

However I do agree that some compassion could have been given to her and she could have been let off with a warning, (unless of course she's been caught before)

undertaking is a major cause of many accidents and should not be seen as a small issue, The fine is a fixed ticket, but personally i would have charged a lot more. What she should have done is flashed the driver holding her up to move over or overtake.Plus not meaning to sound to mean but if she can afford to drive she can afford to pay the fine

l totally agree with you, if a copper gave me a warning that would be enough, somethings tho do deserve a fine, like using mobiles whilst driving.

The officer was doing his job, it should make no diference who he gives the ticket to if they want to dispute the fine thats what the courts are for dont blame the officers they dont make the laws the enforce them

How do you know she is a single mum?I undertake all the time also, it's the drivers in the middle lane not overtaking being dangerous. It's bad that she got caught.

Can someone tell me what undertaking is please.

Sometimes because the other driver is going so bleeding slow in the outside lane(usually a woman) you are FORCED into undertaking or they don't indicate that ther'e turning right until the very last second.

I was in a similar situation the other day, stuck behind a really slow car in the fast lane that wouldn't move over. it was holding up all the traffic so the only thing to do was undertake. It was the driver in front that was at fault because he was driving too slowly on the motorway. Luckily we weren't caught out but I'm sure the police could use more common sense in these situations.
