What are some points why cell phones should NOT be banned while driving?

I am in debate class, and I was assigned to defend NOT banning cell phones while driving. What are some good points that will hold up in a debate?

While distracted driving is dangerous, talking on a cell phone is no more distracting that having a conversation with a person sitting next to you. As a matter of fact, if you are talking to a front seat passenger, you are likely to turn your head to look at them, taking your eyes off the road.

There are many times when driving alone, that the interaction with someone on a cell phone actually keeps the driver more alert. Many roads are repetitive and boring. Having a conversation with someone on the phone, just as talking to a passenger in person does, makes the trip seem to go faster and keeps the driver from getting hypnotized by the road.

We do not need complete and total governmental control of our lives. There are already laws against failure to give full time and attention to driving. If someone is in a situation where they are a hazard while on the phone, current law covers that.

What is next? Are we going to ban drinking and eating behind the wheel? How about banning car stereos, and CD players because irresponsible people sometimes allow themselves to be distracted?

Despite what many people say, there are some very good reasons for not banning cell phones while driving.

My daughter once got lost in a bad neighborhood and had to call me for directions. She was very frightened. Pulling over and stopping would have been the worst thing she could have done.

She stayed on the phone with me while I gave her directions to get back into familiar territory. Without that phone, I hate to think what could have happened.

Someone could be threatening you while driving. Using your phone to call for help could save your life.

You cannot always pull over and stop in every emergency situation.

There is no need for mindless small talk while driving. That stuff can wait. But there are definitely times when using a phone is necessary.

calling 911. you got a horrible position, because there is a large amount of evidence clearly showing that driving while talking on a cell phone is dangerous, even with a hands-free system

i am completely against people talking on cell phones while in cars

THAT BEING SAID-i'm tryin to help ya out cuz nobody else is....

i heard a while ago about texting being a compulsive psychological problem..... look into that and see if you can find anything positive for your position

put something in about disruption of people's daily lives and routines and problems it may cause

maybe something about constantly worrying about the state/condition of people that you would not be able to converse with while in the car thus causing undue stress increasing chances of an accident. (i.e. "i haven't talked to my mom because i've been driving and i'm worried about her" get worried-think about mom-get distracted-wreck)

most of these are a huge strech i know

alyways try to tie debate arguments to the worst possible outcome and use that.

good luck you'll probably get creamed

Let's see, having a cell phone in your hand gives you something to throw at any yahoo that cuts you off. That's about the only positive thing. Cell phones held up to the ear grab far more attention than yakkaholics will ever admit. They think they can "multitask" while driving a huge object capable of killing and maiming people virtually instantly, and that is one of the most dangerous myths of our time.

Sorry, the only possible legitimate use for a cell phone while driving is to call in an emergency situation to 911, or call police to report a drunk driver, which I have done twice. Otherwise, the phone sits untouched, turned off, because I NEVER accept calls while driving.
