What are some tips to become a better driver?

I'm 19 and just got in minor car accident. I'm not hurt but, can you offer some tips to prevent this sort of thing or at least offer some kind words to make me feel better about it?

I already took my drivers ed, but I didn't live in a city when I took it. I've only lived in the city for about a year and only had a car in the city a couple months.

Just about EVERYONE has an accident or is responsible for damage to a car in their first few years driving.
Just stay alert, don't get distracted by passengers and remember that cell phones take away from your focus!

As you get experience you will get better.

PAY ATTENTION! But not to the point where you become paranoid, either. Paranoid drivers are the worst and cause more accidents. Have a little faith in your abilities and your reflexes.

Practice by yourself for awhile and keep in mind ALL the rules of the road, but again without becoming hyper-sensitive.

If you are confident with the rules of the road then make it clear with direct eye-contact with other drivers or pedestrians that they do indeed have the right of way and that you understand this. There are so many novice drivers out there, and even experienced but forgetful ones that need this sort of direction and reminders. And if you have to take the test AGAIN to re-affirm your knowledge and own self-confidence, then do so.

I've had the priviledge of being subtly reminded by other drivers what the rules are when I've become too lax in my own attitudes. It's good to know that they are out there. Embarrassing at times, sure ... but better safe than sorry.

Take driver's ed!! I know it sounds dorky or whatever, but tons of older people take it. All of my friends that havn't taken it have gotten in an accident, all the ones that did take it have never been in one, i'm totally serious.
Hope I helped!

Search and scan before you go, identify and react early to hazards, try to predict what other drivers and pedestrians may do, make decisions early by following 3-4 seconds behind vehicles and knowing who is on all 4 sides of you at any given time.
Execute your driving manoeuvers with thought and purpose.
Check your Rear View Mirror whenever your right foot touches the brake.
Shoulder check before every lane change and turn.
Cover your brake when leaving stop signs and yield signs and any time you are close to any object or person.
Make full stops, and look LEFT, THEN RIGHT, THEN LEFT AGAIN before you move forward.
Time will give you experience. If you develop safe habits, over time you will become a very good driver.

when you drive, expect the person in front of you to suddenly slam on the brakes, and keep a safe distance so you can avoid an accident.
and stay off the cell phone.

Taking a defensive driving course in any of the driving schools that advertise in most car magazines is a great idea.Plus when you graduate showing your diploma to your insurance company should result in a discount on your insurance.Try googling the name bondurant as I think thats the name of one of the larger schools.

'Get the Big Picture' -- that means look farther down the road at what's going on to avoid mishaps -- glad you're ok.

The best way to get better at driving is by driving as much as you can. Don't let an small accident bother you, it is an accident not intentional, as long as you all are ok. Now drive as much, as you can, several hours a day, thats how I did. I started driving at 17 now i'm 19 and I feel very free and good in any type of road. Try it, When I started driving, I would drive to school, and back home, I would pick up my girlfriend as well, I would drive my dad and brothers around almost every day. That helped me become a better driver. Also to avoid accidents, ALWAYS keep your eyes on the road, and don't drive too fast. In time you will feel that you can drive better, and when you do, thats when it gets better, you will see the difference just keep driving as much as you can, even if gas prices are pretty bad nowadays. Good Luck and Be safe.

Keep you eyes on the road, don't get too distracted with what is going on around you. Also try not too speed, speeding will get your adrenaline rushing and you will start to feel your nerves wrecking. Also practice try to do it as much as you can and if you get close to an accident don't let that intimidate you into driving. Everyone goes through a couple of scares when they drive you just gotta keep your head up, do a couple of breathing exercises and continue in your journey.

have fun driving, also try to experience manual stick driving, makes driving on the road more exciting.
