The most obvious are drivers license and a registration. Oh and your keys. It is also wise to have water, batteries, map, flashlight, blanket, first aid kit, and also a cellphone. It's good to be prepared because you never know when an accident will occur, and you never know where it will occur. |

Depends on the journey but I'd say
1./ Cellphone if out of town (Well charged battery / Money on TopUp)
2./ Contact number for breakdown
3./ First Aid Kit
4./ Equipment for breakdown (Triangle; Tow Rope; Tools)
5./ Make sure the Spare is OK
6./ Spare Bulbs
7./ KNOWLEDGE OF VEHICLE |

Car jack, extra tire, tire iron, road flares, gallon of water, basic metric wrench set, flashlight...
Just buy one of those emergency roadside kits. Most newer cars come with a spare tire, jack and tire iron. Its usually under the floor mat in the trunk or under the back bumper for most trucks. |

Obviously a cell phone, as others have said. Make sure that your car has a spare tire, a wrench for removing the lugs on the wheels, and a working jack. If you want, investing in a jump box is not a bad idea. It's basically a machine with jumper cables on one end that holds a charge, so you can jump start your car without the need of another vehicle. Standard jumper cables are also a good idea, just in case. |

In addition to the excellent answers my fellow responders gave. I would also include kitty litter (gives you some traction if you slide off the road due to snow, ice, mud). Energy bars in case you aren't found for a few hours/days.
One of those shaker flashlights. A couple light-sticks. Who to notify in case emergency cards you sould be unconscious. A box of tissues or paper towels or baby wipes. |

Not so much Mechanical...that would be a tire iron and a spare, maybe some road flares. But I also always carry a disposable camera in the glove box. It comes in very handy if you ever have an accident. You can document the damage immediately. It did for me, when I got hit and the guy tried to take off. I got a picture of his car AND him!
Also, carry some water bottles and some snacks. You never know how long you might be stuck. |

Aside from the documents mentioned in people's answers, it is always good to carry a flare, battery jumper cables, a flashlight, and a jack in case of a flat tire. Most auto stores carry automobile emergency kits. Get one. |
